Streaming has definitely made watching TV easier, but it’s also become more frustrating. Traditional networks used to quickly produce lots of episodes to satisfy advertisers, but streaming services do the opposite – they create fewer episodes and release them slowly to keep people subscribed. We’ve gone from getting full seasons of shows like 24 every year, to waiting two, three, or even four years for a shorter season of shows like Stranger Things or The Mandalorian.
While some shows still release new seasons annually, like The Bear and The Pitt, Netflix’s popularity of binge-watching has made waiting for weekly episodes incredibly frustrating. The Pitt, in particular, tells a story that happens over one intense day, but it’s stretched out over months, with each episode ending on a cliffhanger you have to wait a week to see resolved.
For the past seven years, The Boys has been Prime Video’s biggest hit – a darkly funny and often shocking take on the superhero world. Since its debut in 2019, the show, centered around the terrifying Homelander, has kept viewers coming back for more. Now, after five seasons, The Boys has concluded its run. While initially praised by critics and audiences, the show’s later seasons received a less enthusiastic response, with some feeling the story strayed from its core characters, slowed down, and lacked the impact of earlier episodes.
Many of the earlier complaints about the show stemmed from how slowly new seasons were released over several years. Now that the series has finished, you can watch all the seasons consecutively, which fixes at least some of those issues.
The Boys Is A Different Experience If You Binge-Watch It
Watching a series all at once is quite different from watching it as it originally airs, with weeks or even years between seasons. Some shows actually improve with that weekly release, giving viewers time to really think about each episode. Complex shows like Breaking Bad or The White Lotus especially benefit from this slower pace, allowing each episode to truly sink in. On the other hand, binge-watching a show like Chernobyl is like quickly drinking an expensive, aged wine – it’s fast, but you don’t savor it the same way.
Some TV shows are actually better when watched all at once, rather than one episode per week. For example, the first few seasons of Better Call Saul moved slowly and didn’t have a lot of dramatic moments, which caused some viewers to stop watching. However, the show’s clever writing and nuanced details become much more apparent when you watch multiple episodes back-to-back.
Shows packed with action, like The Boys, are best watched all at once. Viewers are eager to see major events – like Billy Butcher confronting Homelander, Ryan discovering his abilities, or Starlight rebelling against a corrupt government – and waiting a week for each episode can be annoying when the show spends time on less important scenes, like celebrities playing poker or a dog’s fantasies. However, those smaller storylines are more enjoyable when you can immediately move on to the next episode.
As a huge fan of The Boys, I’ll admit the show wasn’t perfect throughout its run, but the finale absolutely nailed it. It delivered on all the shocking, violent moments we’d been anticipating since season one. Now that the whole series is on Prime Video, new viewers can binge it and get to that payoff quickly – no more waiting week to week! And honestly, it’s great for us longtime fans too; I’m already planning a rewatch to catch all the little hints I probably missed the first time around.
