Avatar: The Last Airbender Toph actress speaks out amid controversial Netflix casting

As a long-time fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I find myself at a crossroads over the recent casting decision for Toph. On one hand, Miya Cech seems like a talented actress with a passion for the role, having grown up watching the series and nurturing a deep admiration for Toph since day one. On the other hand, the backlash from fans over not casting a visually impaired actor for this character is understandable, given the unique connection between Toph’s abilities and her visual impairment.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that Toph, the remarkable actress from Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, has finally broken her silence in response to the recent uproar surrounding the show’s casting decisions.

As an ardent admirer, I must admit that while the initial season of Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender stirred up a mix of opinions, I’m thrilled to share that the series has been renewed for not one, but two more seasons! And here’s some exciting news: Production on the second season has officially commenced.

Simultaneously with the news that preparations are gathering momentum for the next installment, Netflix has officially disclosed that adored character Toph will be joining forces with Aang and their team in season two. Moreover, they revealed that Miya Cech will be assuming this role.

17-year-old Cech is quickly making a name for herself as a rising star in the acting world, with an impressive resume that includes roles in various TV series, movies, and other projects. She has already amassed a significant fan base.

Nevertheless, the announcement about her casting has sparked significant criticism on social media, as fans of the well-known cartoon series express their disapproval towards Netflix for not selecting a visually impaired actor instead.

In the cartoon show, Toph’s extraordinary Earthbending abilities are rooted in her blindness. Her heightened sensitivity to touch enables her to perceive vibrations from the Earth.

Let’s give a very warm welcome to our Toph, Miya Cech!!!! #GeekedWeek

On Netflix Geeked’s platform, an update from the official Avatar: The Last Airbender account emerged recently, featuring actress Cech expressing her thoughts publicly for the first time since being cast as Toph.

In the video, Chec shared that she spent her childhood watching the animated series multiple times and even re-watched it ten times from start to finish. She also confessed that Toph was her all-time favorite character and immediately asked her team for an audition when the casting call came out.

She wrapped up by stating that she “hopes to do Toph justice and play her well.”

Beyond sharing their latest video, the Avatar crew additionally tackled the recent uproar about the absence of a visually impaired actress in casting. They disclosed that Cech had collaborated with a producer and advisor from the blindness community who is blind themselves.

They further noted that this has been done to “ensure the blindness community is represented.”
