Will The Mandalorian & Grogu 2 Happen — Or The Mandalorian Season 4?

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian and Grogu! The new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is now available, and fans are already thinking about the future of Din Djarin, Grogu, and this exciting Star Wars story that started as a TV series and became a huge hit. The movie picks up after the events of all three seasons of The Mandalorian. By this point, Grogu has begun Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, but ultimately chooses to return to Din Djarin and become a Mandalorian foundling instead of continuing on the path to becoming a Jedi.

The film follows Din Djarin as he continues his work with the New Republic, a role established at the end of The Mandalorian season 3. He’s tracking down the last of the Empire’s forces with Grogu, his Force-sensitive son. While trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu hinted at a huge impact on the New Republic and the Star Wars galaxy, the movie’s story actually takes a more focused approach.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really struck by how self-contained The Mandalorian and Grogu turned out to be. It mostly avoided those big cameos we’ve come to expect, didn’t rely on shocking villain reveals, and, surprisingly, didn’t really impact the wider Star Wars universe in a major way. And honestly, that’s fascinating because it makes me wonder what the future holds – whether it’s a movie follow-up, a fourth season, or just the end of Din Djarin and Grogu’s story. It feels like they have a lot of freedom to go in any direction!

The Mandalorian And Grogu Left The Door Open For The Story To Continue

As previously noted, The Mandalorian and Grogu didn’t significantly impact the overall Star Wars story – whether that’s a good thing or not is debatable, as shown by the varying opinions reflected in its Rotten Tomatoes scores. The plot mainly revolves around Din Djarin’s mission to save Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son, and locate Coyne to hand him over to the New Republic for information. There was a hint that the story might broaden to include bigger dangers to the New Republic, potentially even involving the character Thrawn.

Ultimately, the plot was pretty simple. The villains were the Twins—relatives of Jabba the Hutt who have appeared in Star Wars before—and they were aided by the bounty hunter Embo. Aside from these three characters (and the Imperials Din was delivering, though they weren’t central to the main story), the movie didn’t significantly impact this period in the Star Wars timeline.

Although some fans might be surprised, the ending of the story definitely allows Din Djarin and Grogu – and potentially other characters from The Mandalorian and Grogu, such as Zeb Orrelios and Rotta – to return in future adventures. Din and Grogu finish the story together, still working with the New Republic, and seem prepared to continue their journey.

It’s uncertain if Star Wars will reunite these characters, but it seems unlikely they’ll disappear completely. Disney invested heavily in bringing Star Wars back to theaters after a seven-year gap, and The Mandalorian has proven to be a huge success for Lucasfilm. This suggests we’ll likely see these characters again, though it remains to be seen whether that will be in a follow-up film or a future season of The Mandalorian.

A Sequel Movie May Depend On Reception—Which Is Currently Mixed

As a huge fan, I’m really hoping we get to see more of Din Djarin and Grogu on the big screen! While Lucasfilm hasn’t officially announced The Mandalorian and Grogu 2, I don’t think it’s out of the question. The Mandalorian already proved it could work as a movie, and Lucasfilm seems happy with how it did. Honestly, it feels like this story could naturally become a movie franchise. But, like with any sequel, whether we get more will probably depend on how well the first movie is received by critics and, importantly, how much money it makes at the box office.

Currently, The Mandalorian and Grogu has a surprisingly low score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 61% rating. While we don’t have audience scores yet, they’re likely to be more positive. Still, this isn’t a strong start for the film. The box office numbers are a different story, and even though it’s too early to tell after the opening weekend, being a Star Wars movie generally means it has a good chance of being a financial success.

Whether Lucasfilm will make another movie is uncertain. It depends on how much money this film earns, if audiences like it more than critics, and if it satisfies Disney. Surprisingly, the film’s ending seems to primarily pave the way for a fourth season of The Mandalorian, which had been put on hold.

Shockingly, The Mandalorian Season 4 Feels Most Likely

Given how self-contained The Mandalorian and Grogu feels – some even felt it resembled several episodes of The Mandalorian combined into one film – it would be surprisingly easy to return to the streaming series format. This was unexpected, especially considering the initial announcement of the movie led many to believe the show was ending.

Since Din Djarin and Grogu ended up back where they started at the end of The Mandalorian season 3, bringing them back for a TV series would be a smooth transition. Plus, depending on how the upcoming movie is received, this could be Disney’s best move for the franchise.

This would really set The Mandalorian apart from other Star Wars stories. The closest comparison would be Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which started as a film and then became a seven-season TV series. However, The Mandalorian is different because it’s designed as a TV show first, and a major movie will be released between seasons three and four, interrupting the usual flow of the series.

Disney appears to be moving away from creating shows exclusively for streaming, not just with Star Wars, but also with big franchises like Marvel. This change follows a period where streaming shows were the main focus for both franchises, a strategy that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. Because of this shift, Disney might decide against bringing characters like Din Djarin and Grogu back for another streaming series.

Disney is known for surprising us, so it’s hard to say for sure what the future holds for these characters after The Mandalorian and Grogu. However, right now, a fourth season of The Mandalorian seems like the most probable path.
