As a die-hard Gotham fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the dark and gritty world of Batman, I must say that the filming locations for “The Penguin” have truly brought this beloved city to life on the small screen. Having grown up in New York City myself, it’s been a thrill to see familiar streets and landmarks transformed into the fictional Gotham City.
At last, “The Penguin” has arrived, taking viewers on a journey through the gritty criminal underworld of Gotham City – fortunately, the real-life shooting spots are significantly safer than their portrayed counterparts in the storyline.
In The Penguin, the villainous character Oz Cobblepot, who was previously known as Oz Cobb in the series, is climbing his way back up the ranks of power a week following the occurrences depicted in The Batman.
Navigating the hidden influential network in Gotham isn’t an easy feat, and the city itself plays a pivotal role, much like Oz or Batman. Therefore, it was essential to get the shooting spots accurate for the television series.
Actually, it may come as a shock, but contrary to popular belief, The Penguin wasn’t filmed at the very same spot as the 2022 superhero blockbuster.
The Penguin and The Batman are filmed in different places
Despite both being set in Gotham, The Penguin was filmed in New York City, while The Batman was shot in Liverpool, Glasgow, and London.
It’s quite surprising that these two projects share the same setting, given they were filmed on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Interestingly, The Batman’s dark portrayal of the famous fictitious city is divided across locations in the United Kingdom.
As a devoted fan, I can share that the story unfolds with “The Penguin” getting hit by a bullet in the bustling heart of New York City. The main filming kicked off in March 2023 under the temporary title ‘Boss’. Capturing the city’s essence, exterior shots were taken around town, while the interiors and soundstage work took place at Silvercup Studios North, nestled within Queens.
Due to our filming site being Westchester County, New York, there were some delays because a 2023 Writer’s Strike occurred, causing disruptions in that region as strikers were active there.
Another location, at a church in Harlem, was also occupied by picketers halting filming. When it resumed, they filmed in Brooklyn. Production also took place in the Bronx and at Whitestone, Queens.
The Penguin filming locations
The Penguin was filmed in interior and exterior locations around New York City:
- Riverside Drive in West Harlem (Iceberg Lounge Club)
- 27th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues (Gotham Diamond District)
- Williamsburg Bridge tower
- La Selva (Falcone mansion)
- Gramercy Park (Hawksmoor NYC)
- Hewes Street subway station (Buddy’s corner mart)
- Kew Gardens train station (Irving Grove Station)
- Seneca Avenue BMT station (Eve’s apartment)
- Chinatown, South Bronx, Yonkers (Crown Point)
- Silvercup Studios North
In the production of The Batman movie, it was crucial to incorporate the Iceberg Lounge Club, a key hideout of the character The Penguin. This scene was filmed at the expansive metal archways situated along Riverside Drive in West Harlem, which interestingly enough, was also used as a location for the Clown Agency in Joker. Despite this, the interior shots of the club that appear in The Batman were actually filmed at Printworks in London, UK.
The outside scenes of Oz’s apartment, located in the Diamond District of Gotham, were captured on 27th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Additionally, the top section of the Williamsburg Bridge tower, enhanced with computer-generated imagery, can be spotted in these shots.
Should you wish to explore the Falcone mansion, it’s important to note that the filming location was La Selva, a place situated in Upper Brookville on Long Island’s northern coast.
Regarding the mansion, production designer Kalina Ivanov commented (via Time Out): “Since Carmine was a third-generation gangster, it was assumed he would have exquisite taste. Consequently, we decided his house should resemble a Gatsby-esque mansion in Oyster Bay. In the end, we found a stunning mansion located in La Selva.
Among the most challenging environments depicted in The Penguin is Crown Point, a district where Gotham’s least affluent residents are compelled to endure deplorable living circumstances. Ivanov drew inspiration from historical events as such conditions were also prevalent during the 19th century, particularly in notorious areas like Five Points, New York City.
They set up this environment by blending various places such as Chinatown, the South Bronx, and Yonkers.
Ivanov expressed that we aimed to incorporate the authentic history of New York into the architectural elements of our production, making it a key aspect. He found it incredibly impactful to maintain historical accuracy.
