Colin Farrell reveals unusual “antidote” for getting out of his Penguin character

As a fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the gritty world of Gotham and its colorful characters, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Colin Farrell‘s approach to playing Oz Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. His choice to counterbalance the darkness of his role with the light-heartedness of Pixar films is not only clever but also relatable. We all need our escapes, especially when navigating the murky waters of a criminal underworld!

In the gritty realm of Batman, Colin Farrell has an ingenious trick up his sleeve to ensure he can break free from his menacing character, The Penguin (Oz Cobblepot).

Initially, when “The Batman” released in 2022, it wasn’t anticipated to spawn an HBO series. However, contrary to expectations, we now have “The Penguin,” which debuted this month – a dark and gritty television show delving into the corrupt criminal world of Gotham City.

In the aftermath of Matt Reeves’ superhero film, one week has passed and chaos reigns in Gotham, with the city submerged and in shambles. This turbulent situation provides an opportune moment for The Penguin to seize control, orchestrating a power grab.

Just as anticipated, the realm of villains and criminal underworlds isn’t particularly cheerful. Fortunately for Farrell, he had another occupation to balance out his work on The Penguin, and he also found another method to lighten his spirit: immersing himself in Pixar films.

He clarified through AP Entertainment that the job was indeed delightful. It was similar to daylight and positivity compared to the gloominess and pessimism associated with The Penguin. Essentially, this eight-hour series of The Penguin was bordering on nihilistic drama. So, it served as a perfect remedy against such heaviness.

A good approach would be to retreat to what you’re comfortable with – family, friends, and nature. In fact, I found myself immersed in Pixar movies lately. I watched Toy Story, and at the close of my workday as Penguin, I’d unwind by watching more Pixar films for a lighthearted and beautiful escape.

This strategy seems quite astute, and it might be revisited when planning for The Batman 2, given that Oz is set to reappear in the sequel. Fortunately, The Penguin has been well-received by audiences so far, garnering positive feedback from fans and a high rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
