So, I was surprised to see that Luke Nichols, the guy who made Outdoor Boys, actually showed up at a public event! He’s been pretty quiet since leaving YouTube, but he went back to George Mason University’s law school – Antonin Scalia Law School, specifically – to speak at their 2026 graduation ceremony. It was cool to see him doing something new.
After graduating with a law degree in 2009, Nichols became a popular outdoor content creator on YouTube. He recently gave a commencement speech about surviving challenges, achieving financial security, and embracing change. Videos of his speech quickly went viral on social media, shared by people who attended or saw it online.
In her speech, Nichols drew a connection between everyday challenges and surviving in the wilderness, explaining to the graduates that the skills needed for survival aren’t limited to outdoor situations.
He explained that they’re simply doing what they need to do to get by, whether it’s basic survival tasks like building a fire or hunting, or more complex things like legal work. They’re making the most of what they have.
Luke Nichols reflects on financial struggles before YouTube success
Nichols shared that he graduated during the challenging time of the 2008 financial crisis. He explained that after losing a job as a law clerk near graduation, he had to send out over 3,200 resumes to find work.
“I got 15 job interviews and no job offers,” Nichols explained.
So, the guy who made The Outdoor Boys? Turns out he had a tough time finding work after that. He told me he basically worked for over a year without getting paid, and he even spent a ton of his own money on ads that just didn’t pan out. Eventually, he finally got things on track and decided to become a lawyer instead!

He explained that everything turned around after fourteen months. His last advertising campaign was a huge success, attracting many new clients and rapidly growing his law firm, which led to significant financial security for his family.
Nichols’ speech mainly focused on the importance of saving money and staying adaptable, advice he considered crucial for new graduates facing an unpredictable job market.
According to Nichols, having savings gives you freedom and choices. But if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you’re limited to just two options: keep working every week, or risk financial hardship.
Nichols plans to leave YouTube in 2025, after building Outdoor Boys into a hugely popular channel focused on outdoor adventures. He explained that the constant attention and public scrutiny had become stressful and were affecting his family, leading to his decision.
