After nearly twelve years of updates, events, and stories that changed how online games are updated, Destiny 2 will be ending. Bungie announced that June 9, 2026, will be the release date for its last update, meaning the game will no longer be actively developed after that point.
For ten years, the studio focused on building the Destiny universe, overcoming challenges like job cuts and a difficult takeover by Sony. While the release of The Final Shape concluded the game’s main storyline and should have been a celebratory moment, it unexpectedly marked the start of the studio’s decline.
Destiny 2’s live-service era is over
Bungie described the decision to end support for the game not as a defeat, but as a natural step forward, explaining that it was time for the worlds they’ve created, and the Destiny universe, to move beyond the current game, Destiny 2.
The studio announced it’s focusing on creating new games, and the current game will receive one final update on June 9th before support ends. As Forbes writer Paul Tassi stated, this effectively means the game is finished – all future expansions and content updates have been cancelled.

The final update, ‘Monument of Triumph,’ is a significant sendoff for Destiny 2. It includes major changes like an updated Director, a redesigned Pantheon, the permanent return of Sparrow Racing League, new ways to customize your game experience, complete updates to rewards from raids and dungeons, an evolved Gambit mode, and fresh Crucible modes. Bungie has also assured players that Destiny 2 will remain playable even after active development stops, just like the original Destiny still does today.
Bungie has announced they’ll be sharing more details in blog posts leading up to the launch, starting with information about the return of the Director and updates to the Seasonal Racing League (SRL).
This news follows Bungie’s decision to postpone the Monument of Triumph update for three months to make way for the launch of Marathon. Despite a somewhat slow start in player numbers, the studio is now planning several years of story-driven content for this new game.
