Tomb Raider Lands on HBO Max in Just 3 Days

Alicia Vikander played Lara Croft in the 2018 film . Starting soon, on HBO Max, viewers will be able to watch the movie – it becomes available on the streaming service in just three days.

The movie Tomb Raider will be available on May 24th. The 2018 film was a fresh start for the Tomb Raider series, arriving 15 years after Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. Both that film and the previous one from 2001 starred Angelina Jolie in the lead role.

Tomb Raider Was Based on the Rebooted Video Game Trilogy

The movie Tomb Raider is mainly based on the 2013 video game, but it also includes parts from the 2015 game, Rise of the Tomb Raider. The story follows Lara Croft as she undertakes a dangerous quest to find out what happened to her missing father, traveling to the last place he was known to be.

With a budget of around $100 million, the movie Tomb Raider earned $275 million globally. This performance matched the box office results of Angelina Jolie’s first Tomb Raider film, and was a considerable improvement over her second, which brought in $156 million. However, the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot received much better reviews than the earlier films, scoring 52% on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 20% for the 2001 movie and 23% for the 2003 sequel.

A follow-up to the Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft was in development until 2022. Originally, Amy Jump and Ben Wheatley were set to write and direct the sequel, with plans to begin filming in early 2020 and release the film in 2021.

I was so excited for the sequel, but unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic really threw a wrench into things and delayed production, meaning we had to say goodbye to a 2021 release. It was a shame to see Jump and Wheatley leave the project – I especially learned Wheatley went on to direct Meg 2: The Trench. Thankfully, they brought in Misha Green, who I think is a fantastic choice as the new writer and director. She even revealed they were calling the sequel Tomb Raider: Obsidian during development, which sounds amazing!

What’s the Latest on Prime Video’s Tomb Raider?

Unfortunately, the planned Tomb Raider: Obsidian movie was cancelled by MGM in 2022 when they lost the rights to make it. Shortly after, Amazon Studios—which is owned by the same company as MGM—announced they were creating a live-action Tomb Raider TV series, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the lead writer.

I’m so excited for the new Tomb Raider show on Amazon! It’s been in the works for three years, and they finally started filming in January 2026. Unfortunately, production had to pause for about two weeks recently because of something that happened on set.

Details about the plot of the new Tomb Raider TV series are still secret, but Turner previously explained to the LA Times that the show will focus on Lara Croft’s character and motivations, rather than her appearance, which has been a major focus in the games and films.

The actor explained, “I’m eager to portray a different aspect of her character. She’s incredibly competent and doesn’t shy away from showcasing her abilities. She’s a woman who confidently owns her strengths.”

Tomb Raider arrives on HBO Max on May 24.
