Every upcoming The Chosen spinoff: Dallas Jenkins’ Biblical Universe explained

As a long-time admirer of captivating narratives that delve into the human condition, I find the upcoming Biblical Universe series intriguing and thought-provoking. Having spent countless hours pondering over Tony Soprano’s power struggles and Moses’ reluctant leadership, I can relate to the questions they both pose – what would it have been like to walk alongside these figures and make my own choices?

The life story of Jesus Christ will carry on through further television series, with Dallas Jenkins and 5&2 Studios planning a lineup of upcoming spinoff shows based on “The Chosen”.

Initially self-funded as an independent drama back in 2017, The Chosen has since experienced phenomenal success. This includes its fourth season being screened in cinemas globally, earning a staggering $59 million at the box office.

While the initial series concludes after Season 7 (focusing on Jesus’ resurrection), the stories aren’t ending there. A lineup of fresh TV shows from The Chosen universe is in the works, with creator Dallas Jenkins also establishing a new studio, 5&2 Studios, to spearhead these upcoming projects.

In the realm often referred to as “The Biblical Universe”, there will be ongoing development of narratives that draw inspiration from the Bible, focusing on Jesus and other significant characters. Ranging from children’s cartoons to live-action reality series, let me break down each upcoming spinoff based on the popular show, The Chosen.

The Chosen Adventures

In simple terms, following “The Chosen” in the Biblical context, there’s a planned children’s animated series named “The Chosen Adventures,” consisting of 14 episodes.

The upcoming series will offer a fresh, youthful perspective on the tale of Jesus, featuring Paul Walter Hauser, Jordin Sparks, and Yvonne Orji. However, it’s been clarified (on September 21) that Paul Walter Hauser won’t be voicing Jesus in this new production.

Actors participating in the series The Chosen reportedly include Jonathan Roumie, Paras Patel, Elizabeth Tabish, Noah James, Joey Vahedi, Yasmine Al-Bustami, Brandon Potter, and George H. Xanthis.

As stated by Jenkins, the upcoming show is set to unfold concurrently and within the same scenic backdrop as “The Chosen.” However, instead of focusing solely on Jesus’ interactions with adults, it will particularly highlight a unique encounter between Jesus and a group of children, primarily guided by a nine-year-old girl named Abby, in the wilderness.

According to Jenkins as reported by Variety, “Jenkins stated about the series: ‘We have an opportunity to narrate the tale of Jesus from a child’s perspective within the playful medium of animation. There seems to be potential in this idea, viewing Jesus through the lens of children.’

He went on to say that they won’t delve deeper into that topic on our main broadcast. However, imagine if we created a humorous and intelligent animated series where both kids and adults could enjoy it. Our aim was to ensure we handled this subject matter well.

We don’t want our second project to be just ‘okay’; instead, we aim to create something that truly resonates with the audience and evokes a strong positive response.

The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls

In this new twist, the expansive Chosen universe ventures into real-life scenarios with “The Chosen and Bear Grylls: Surviving in the Wild,” a six-part series.

In this show, Jenkins will be tagging along with Bear Grylls (from Man vs. Wild) as they tackle grueling physical tests. Over the course of the series, other members from The Chosen will join Grylls, delving into their personal tales and insights about their characters in the show.

Jenkins stated that this is the initial collaboration among many in the reality television sector. As someone who enjoys the great outdoors, I’m a bit apprehensive about what lies ahead. However, I’m ready to step up and contribute. The concept is to join forces with others who have substantial followings, allowing us to introduce our unique content into their spheres of influence.

Untitled Moses series

The upcoming major live-action production from Jenkins and The Chosen is slated to be a three-season television series focusing on the life of Moses. Jenkins will assume responsibilities as writer, director, and executive producer for this project.

The three seasons will be re-labeled as “the three epochs of the Moses narrative,” as per Jenkins’ explanation. In Season 1, the story of the rescue from Egypt unfolds, while Season 2 encompasses events such as the parting of the Red Sea, the escape, the Exodus, and the journey towards the promised land.

After decades of traversing desolate wastelands, I’ve finally found my long-lost paradise. That’s where the next chapter of my epic journey unfolds – in Season 3!

Jenkins aimed to create a series with fewer episodes due to his observation that the “mothership show” had led him to prefer not to undertake a seven-season project for the rest of his life.

From my gaming perspective, I found an intriguing twist in the narrative – Jenkins draws some unanticipated parallels between the legendary figure of Moses and the iconic TV character, Tony Soprano.

Jenkins stated that no biblical tale, not even those about Jesus, seems to have been more deeply ingrained into popular culture, history, language, and visual symbolism than the account of Moses.

In the heart of an extraordinary tale, we find Tony Soprano, a man unwillingly assuming the role of leader for what seems like the biggest family on earth. Despite this position, he didn’t desire it. Tony Soprano was constantly striving for power, while Moses was more inclined to relinquish it.

Despite this, it was him whom God selected to spearhead the largest religious and cultural revolution in human history. Yet, he lacked qualifications. He was given the mission to challenge oppressors and slave owners, persuading them to free the Jews. Additionally, he struggled with a speech impediment.

In much the same vein as The Chosen queries the experience of encountering Jesus, following Him, or opposing Him, I believe the tale of Moses poses an identical question.

Untitled Acts of the Apostles series

In addition to the ongoing project, there are two more shows currently being worked on within the Biblical Universe. One is centered around the Acts of the Apostles, while the other is a restricted run series focusing on the life of Joseph.

The television show “Acts of the Apostles” is being tightly guarded, revealing few details about its plot or potential duration.

Yet, the title itself offers a hint. Known as The Acts of the Apostles, this book is the fifth in the New Testament collection. It narrates the establishment of the Christian Church and the dissemination of its teachings throughout the expansive Roman Empire.

The composition encompasses both the Acts and the Gospel according to Luke. This includes descriptions of Jesus’ resurrection, the events of Pentecost, and the forced displacement of early Christians from Jerusalem. Subsequent sections detail the incarceration of the Apostle Paul.

That’s a lot of ground to cover and could suggest that we’re looking at another multi-season show.

Untitled Joseph series

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that a restricted number of Joseph series is being developed. As yet, we don’t know the timeline for its release, but Jenkins hinted that the story could be effectively conveyed within eight episodes.

“He stated: ‘Our writers admire The Chosen and aspire to create their unique interpretations of it, while still adhering to the broader narrative we’re developing.’

We only invite individuals as filmmakers and storytellers who genuinely appreciate our flagship production, and they’re not inclined to change our methods of storytelling.

Where will The Chosen spinoffs stream?

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m currently unsure where future spin-offs of The Chosen series and Dallas Jenkins’ shows will end up on the streaming platform scene.

5&2 Studios is still relatively new, so they don’t have any unique agreements with specific streaming platforms as of now.

The way The Chosen is distributed sets it apart – it’s accessible through its dedicated app using a unique pay-it-forward system. Additionally, the series has made appearances in movie theaters. Regardless of future developments, viewers can always enjoy The Chosen without charge.

Regarding the other broadcast channels, Jenkins stated: “If a streaming service is prepared to compensate us sufficiently to avoid asking our audience for funds, that’s wonderful.

We’ll discuss exclusive windows and related topics, but our goal is to ensure accessibility for those who cannot afford it, especially in developing nations.

One key factor in choosing our partners will be those who are committed to helping us maintain sustainability over the next decade and beyond. This means avoiding situations where we have to rely on small income sources, like streaming platforms, and instead focusing on long-term projects. However, we also acknowledge the importance of providing free access to a significant portion of the global audience.
