Netflix Unveils Latest Spanish Film Slate at San Sebastian

As a passionate connoisseur of cinematic art, I am thrilled by the diverse and captivating lineup of Spanish productions announced at this year’s San Sebastián Festival by none other than Netflix! The rich tapestry of talent on display promises to weave tales that will enthrall audiences worldwide.

At the grand event of one of Spain’s largest film festivals this year in San Sebastián, Netflix revealed upcoming Spanish films from “Cable Girls” creator Ramón Campos and director David Victori of “Cross the Line”. Additionally, they shared information about emerging talent on four other notable productions.

In Madrid, at Ramón Campos’ production house Bambú Producciones (responsible for “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet,” and “Fariña”), Carlos Sedes (director of “The Asunta Case” and “Cable Girls”) presents the murder mystery “La Viuda Negra.” The story opens with a body found in a parking lot in Valencia, having been stabbed seven times. The main suspect for the Homicide Squad is Maje, the young, compassionate widow who had only been married to the deceased for a few months.

Labeled as a gripping psychological thriller, “Cortafuego” by Victoris is brought to you by Anxo Rodríguez and Ferrán Tomás of ESpotlight Media, featuring a stellar cast including Joaquín Furriel, Belén Cuesta, Enric Auquer, and Diana Gómez. The story revolves around Mara, a newly widowed woman, who journeys to the family’s countryside vacation home to ready it for sale. However, her peaceful trip takes a dark turn when her daughter Lise goes missing as a forest fire erupts nearby.

Other talent announcements:

Eva Vives, recognized for her work on “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “All About Nina,” will take the helm as director for the investigative series titled “La Desconocida.” This production is spearheaded by Matías Mosteirin, Pola Zito, and Leticia Cristi at K&S Films in Argentina, under Netflix’s banner title “El Eternauta.

Created by the local powerhouse duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi through their label Suma Content, “My Dearest Señorita” is an upcoming reimagining of Jaime de Arimañán’s 1972 film with the same title, which was nominated for the Best Foreign Film Academy Award. The initiative was initially announced in February, but today, it has been disclosed that the remake will be helmed by Fernando González Molina and penned by Alana S. Portero under Netflix’s guidance.

The upcoming film titled “53 Sundays” is the latest venture from successful director Cesc Gay, produced by Marta Esteban and Laia Bosch at Imposible Films. Featuring popular Spanish actors Carmen Machi, Javier Cámara, and Javier Gutierrez, it follows the story of three siblings trying to decide on the best course for their elderly father who has recently developed peculiar behaviors. Initially gathering for a polite family meeting, tensions rise as they fail to agree on a solution, leading to unexpected chaos.

A Ghost in the Battle” is a fresh political thriller penned and directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes. The production boasts high-profile names such as Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida, and J.A. Bayona, an Oscar-nominee for “The Snow Queen,” serving as producers. The star-studded cast includes Susana Abaitua, Andrés Gertrúdix, Iraia Elias, Raúl Arévalo, and Ariadna Gil. A teaser in San Sebastian hinted at a fast-paced action film. The story draws inspiration from the real-life accounts of several members of the Guardia Civil who were part of the anti-terrorism efforts in the Basque region.

I’ll continue to invest in high-quality, diverse stories, just as Verónica Fernández, head of Netflix’s fiction film department, mentioned at the San Sebastian presentation. This commitment isn’t limited to producing originals; we also plan to distribute these exceptional tales. As examples, she referenced Alejandro Amenábar’s “The Captive” and Fernando Trueba’s “Haunted Heart.

Four out of the top ten most popular non-English movies on Netflix hail from Spain, as Fernández pointed out to the audience at San Sebastián.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news: Netflix Spain has announced that out of the global top 15 most-watched shows and movies from January to June this year, a whopping three were Spanish productions!
