Titus Welliver’s New Bosch Replacement Show Drops Gritty First Look

Titus Welliver is well-known for his role as Harry Bosch in the popular police series Bosch and its continuation, Bosch: Legacy. Now, he’s starting a new show called The Westies.

The new crime drama, first announced in March of last year, is almost here. MGM+ recently released a first look at the show, following the addition of several well-known actors, before its upcoming release.

The Westies Will Be a Brutal Drama

This short, 30-second trailer perfectly captures the dark and intense atmosphere of the new crime drama, set in 1980s New York. It establishes J.K. Simmons’ character, Eamon Sweeney, as a force to be reckoned with, and gives a quick glimpse of Ray Liotta’s Glenn Keenan. The trailer also hints at the show’s expected level of violence, given that it’s created by Chris Brancato, the mind behind Narcos.

The Westies is a fast-paced crime drama about New York City’s notorious Irish gang. Set in the early 1980s, the story follows the gang as the construction of the Javits Center in their Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood offers a chance to make a lot of money.

Though heavily outnumbered by the five Italian Mafia families, the Westies gang has managed to secure a share of criminal profits through a tense and unsteady truce, thanks to their reputation for extreme violence and clever tactics. However, disagreements between the younger, more reckless members and the older leaders could easily destroy this fragile peace and bring increased scrutiny from the FBI, who are already investigating the Mafia.

The Westies Comes 1 Year After Bosch: Legacy’s Cancellation

The new crime drama features a strong cast, including Tom Brittney as James “Jimmy” Roarke, Jessica Frances Dukes as Birdie Polk, Stanley Morgan as Mickey Flanagan, Sarah Bolger as Bridget Walsh, Allen Leech as Brendan Cahill, Hamish Allan-Headly as John Gotti, Vincent Walsh as Eddie Breen, and Hilary McCormack as Erin Malone. Aidan Wojtak-Hissong, Jeremy Walmsley, and Dylan Taylor will also appear in recurring roles as Danny Keenan, Pat, and Connor, respectively.

Brancato developed the series alongside Michael Panes. This partnership reunites the showrunner of Narcos with MGM+ following their previous successful projects, Hotel Cocaine and The Godfather of Harlem.

Welliver is known for his work on popular TV shows, including and its spin-off, and most recently, Dark Winds. He joined the acclaimed series in its fourth season, playing Dominic McNair – a surprisingly villainous role for an actor best known for his heroic portrayal of Harry Bosch.

Welliver hinted at the complexities of his new character, Glenn Keenan, explaining that he’s a Vietnam War veteran working as a police officer. Though he’s still on the streets, he’s become corrupt, and his sense of right and wrong is completely lost.

This new, realistic series follows the surprising end of Bosch: Legacy, which premiered in 2022 and ran for three seasons until 2025. Though both the original show and its sequel have concluded, actor Titus Welliver has the opportunity to reprise his role in the popular series Ballard. He previously appeared as a guest star in Season 1, and Ballard has already been renewed for a second season.

The Westies premieres on MGM+ on July 12.
