Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War Ending Explained

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the Amazon series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War. The season concludes with Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) returning to the CIA with a renewed sense of purpose, alongside James Greer (Wendell Pierce). Directed by Andrew Bernstein and with a script co-written by Krasinski, Ghost War sends Jack on a global chase to Dubai and London, tracking down Starling, a disbanded black ops group that Greer previously deactivated two decades earlier.

As a huge fan of the Jack Ryan series, I was on the edge of my seat with this latest twist! It turns out Liam Crown, the guy running Starling, is still obsessed with conflicts from after 9/11, and he’s actually restarting terrorist plans that Greer and he used to shut down. Things get really intense when a car bomb – orchestrated by Starling – takes out the CIA Director, Elizabeth Wright, and suddenly Greer is in charge. Jack quickly figures out that Crown is hiding something valuable – intel in Dubai connected to a former MI6 guy named Nigel Cooke – and that intel could blow the whole Starling operation wide open. It’s a classic Jack Ryan race against time to uncover the truth!

Jack Ryan and MI6 agent Emma Marlow, along with Mike November, head to Dubai in two teams. Their mission: to grab crucial intelligence – known as the Starling data – and send it to the CIA. This means battling their way up a skyscraper to reach the server room. At the same time, James Greer is leading a backup team with extra support to Dubai, ready to help Jack deal with any trouble from Starling.

How Jack Ryan’s Team Stopped Liam Crown & Starling

Liam Crown had already arrived in Dubai, and Starling was positioned, waiting for Jack Ryan to reach Nigel’s server. Jack, Emma, and Mike battled their way up the skyscraper, fighting off Starling’s forces as they headed for the server room. Once inside, Jack contacted Patrick Klinghoffer, an old friend from the CIA’s T-FAD division, who was ready at Langley to receive the downloaded information.

Jack successfully sends the important information to the CIA, but Crown shows up with reinforcements. Emma is shot during the chaos, and Crown gains the upper hand over Jack. Just as Crown is about to kill Ryan, Greer’s team arrives in a helicopter and kills Crown. Liam is fatally wounded and continues to provoke Jack, claiming Jack isn’t willing to do what’s necessary. Jack proves him wrong by shooting Liam, ending the threat.

Jack’s ruthless killing of Crown confirms what Greer always suspected about Ryan: he’s capable of being a decisive leader, someone who can make difficult decisions and act without hesitation when necessary.

I’m so relieved! Thanks to Jack Ryan, we now know everything about Starling – the whole operation. We even found out who the mole was in MI6, working with Crown all along: it’s Deputy Chief Andrew Spear, and he was actually part of Starling! Now that Crown and most of his people are gone, we finally have what we need to completely shut down Starling for good and make sure it never comes back.

Jack Ryan Returns To The CIA As Deputy Director

While traveling to Dubai, James Greer wrote a letter to the President suggesting Jack Ryan for the role of Deputy Director. After the events of Ghost War, Jack accepts the position, and he and Greer return to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

In season 4 of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, Jack Ryan left his job as Deputy Director – a position he held under Elizabeth Wright – to go back to field work. Wright then chose her mentor, Greer, to take over as Deputy Director. The season ends with Jack and Greer reaffirming their strong bond, after Jack initially wondered if he could still rely on Greer.

For fans of Tom Clancy, seeing James Greer as the CIA Director and Jack Ryan as his second-in-command feels natural. In the story Clear and Present Danger, Greer (played by James Earl Jones) was the CIA Director who recommended Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) for the Deputy Director of Intelligence position. It took four seasons of the Prime Video series Jack Ryan and a movie, but the show has finally placed Jack and Greer in these well-known roles.

Jack Ryan’s new, important role at the CIA means he’s leaving his job on Wall Street. Sadly, his relationship with Dr. Cathy Mueller also ended before the events of Ghost War, and the breakup happened privately during the previous Christmas.

The Prime Video series Jack Ryan has consistently avoided having Jack and Cathy get married, despite their romance being a key part of the original Tom Clancy novels and all the Jack Ryan films. John Krasinski’s portrayal of Jack Ryan remains unmarried, and it seems unlikely he’ll ever tie the knot with Cathy within the show’s version of the story.

Mike November Is Also Back In The CIA

Mike November has officially rejoined the CIA, with James Greer helping to make it happen. Following the events of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season four, Mike had been working for Greer as a security consultant. Although he generally seems cheerful, Emma Marlow suggested that Mike was in trouble, with dangerous people pursuing him in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

In November, Mike steps out of the supporting role and shows he’s a key member of the team with Jack Ryan and James Greer. During a personal conversation, he helps James realize that their constant debates with Jack about morality aren’t about right or wrong, but stem from a deeper truth: the three of them are, essentially, all each other has – “the only family” they’ll ever know.

By the conclusion of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, Jack, Greer, and Mike’s family have reunited and are working closely together at the CIA, their bond stronger than before.

Emma Marlow’s Father Is Revealed

Emma Marlow joins the ranks of strong female characters who support Jack Ryan, like Harriet Baumann from season two of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Although Marlow and Jack didn’t initially trust each other while working together on Ghost War, Jack earning her trust – and saving her life not once, but twice in Dubai – changed their dynamic.

Marlow discovered a hidden connection in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War: Emma’s long-lost father was Nigel Cooke. Jack Ryan figured it out when Emma took him to Nigel’s hidden apartment above a pub, where he kept photos of them together. Jack was surprised to see such personal feelings from a spy. Interestingly, Emma didn’t seem upset by her father’s death in Dubai.

Ryan understood that Liam Crown’s nickname for Marlow – “Blonde Ambition” – revealed that Crown had also visited Nigel’s apartment and seen a picture of young Emma dressed as Madonna. Emma then called Andrew Spear on a hunch, and Spear unknowingly revealed his involvement by admitting he too had been to Nigel’s. This confirmed that Spear was a mole working with Crown.

Okay, so Jack Ryan and Emma Marlow definitely had some chemistry, but honestly, the show Ghost War moved so fast, there just wasn’t room for a full-blown romance. It makes me wonder if we’ll see Emma again, or if the Jack Ryan films will start bringing in new female leads like they do with the Bond movies – keeping things fresh, you know?

Will There Be A Jack Ryan Movie Sequel?

The team behind Jack Ryan, including star John Krasinski, is hoping to make more movies even after the show finishes its four-season run on Prime Video in 2023. While the recent game, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, didn’t get good reviews, whether they make sequels will depend on how many people watch it online.

It’s looking less likely that Prime Video will expand the Tom Clancy universe with new spinoff shows. A sequel to Michael B. Jordan’s Without Remorse from 2021 never materialized, and plans for a series starring Michael Peña as Ding Chavez were also dropped. Rights issues with several Rainbow Six characters have stalled those potential shows, but the Jack Ryan series remains the most successful and important part of the franchise.

Because Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is already so popular on Prime Video, viewers likely won’t be swayed by critics’ reviews of Ghost War. It’s probable that we’ll see more two-hour Jack Ryan adventures starring John Krasinski after Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War.
