A British radio station has apologized for falsely reporting the death of King Charles III. They said the mistake happened because of a technical glitch during a practice run of their emergency announcement system.
Radio Caroline, a former pirate radio station in Essex, reported that a safety protocol meant to be used upon the death of the monarch was mistakenly triggered on Tuesday, May 19th. This caused the station to fall briefly silent before regular broadcasts continued.
So, I was checking out ITV News’ website yesterday, and I noticed something weird. They usually have recordings of their broadcasts available, but anything from between 1:58 PM and 5:00 PM on Tuesday was just…gone. It wasn’t on their site at all. Pretty strange, right?
In a Facebook post, station manager Peter Moore explained that a computer glitch at the main studio mistakenly triggered the procedure for announcing the death of the Monarch – a plan all UK stations have in place but hope never to use. This happened on Tuesday afternoon (May 19) and led to a false announcement that the King had passed away.
So, Radio Caroline went off the air, which was the signal we were waiting for. That told us to get things back on and quickly apologize to everyone listening.

Radio Caroline says emergency protocol was triggered by mistake
Moore personally apologized to both the King and the station’s audience after the incorrect announcement was made.
Caroline has enjoyed sharing the Queen’s, and now the King’s, Christmas message, and hopes to continue doing so for years to come, according to a recent statement.
“We apologise to HM the King and to our listeners for any distress caused.”
King Charles and Queen Camilla were visiting Northern Ireland when an incident occurred. While in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter, they watched performances and had the chance to meet the artists involved.
Radio Caroline started in 1964 as a famous pirate radio station in the UK, and eventually became a legal, licensed broadcaster.
