Homelander’s fate in The Boys comics is wildly different from Season 5

The TV series The Boys has changed a lot from the original comic book, especially when it comes to what happens to certain characters. We’ll take a look at what happened to Homelander in the comics and how it compares to his storyline in the show.

From the very beginning, the main characters have been determined to eliminate Homelander. We won’t spoil the ending just yet, but what happens to him in the show differs significantly from the comic book version – here’s a breakdown of the finale.

Massive spoilers for both the TV show and the comics ahead.

How does Homelander die in the comic vs the show?

Okay, so in the original The Boys comics, Black Noir actually kills Homelander! It turns out Noir isn’t just some random hero – he’s a clone of Homelander created to eliminate him if he ever went rogue. Seriously, he’s basically the real villain of the whole story. It’s a crazy twist!

Homelander’s actions never truly justify killing him, so his clone begins setting him up to take the blame for various offenses – including the attack on Becca.

Eventually, the true Homelander breaks the rules, starting a takeover and killing the President. During a confrontation with Butcher in the Oval Office, Noir shows up and reveals he’s been the one behind the crimes all along. They fight, and the original Homelander is killed, though it happens off-screen.

Unlike some other superhero stories, the TV show The Boys handled the character Noir differently. He wasn’t simply a copy of someone else; Homelander killed the original version, and The Deep finished off the second.

Erik Kripke, the showrunner, shared his reasoning for deviating from the original comic book storyline. He felt the twist of revealing a different villain wouldn’t be as impactful or satisfying for viewers. While he understands some fans might be disappointed, he wanted the main villain he’d established to truly be the villain, and wasn’t interested in pursuing the plotline involving a clone.

The show takes inspiration from other sources, featuring moments like a confrontation in the Oval Office and Butcher violently destroying a clone with a crowbar.

Okay, so things got intense. I still can’t believe it! Homelander, the guy who seemed unstoppable, actually lost his powers – Kimiko totally blasted him with something that took them away, right in the Oval Office! But it didn’t end there. Butcher then went absolutely wild, just pummeling Homelander and finally, he… well, he used his crowbar and basically ended him. It was brutal, honestly, seeing his head… pop. I was shocked, but also… kind of satisfied?
