Pokemon Go special evolutions & how to do them all

As a seasoned Pokémon Go trainer, I can confidently say that the journey to unlock these special evolutions has always been an exciting and unpredictable one. Each evolution method adds a unique twist to the game, making it more engaging and challenging for us trainers.

Just as with other games within the franchise, understanding the unique evolution techniques is essential for players who aim to fill their Pokedex in Pokemon Go.

Over time, the methods for Pokemon evolution have grown to be more frequent and intricate. While most Pokemon can evolve once they reach a certain level, newer games feature numerous creatures whose evolution requires unique conditions that aren’t always clearly stated, like Alcremie and Kingambit.

With the expansion of the mobile game’s Pokedex, similar additional evolution conditions have been incorporated in Pokemon Go, generally following the patterns established in the primary series.

This tutorial will cover all the unique ways Pokemon Go creatures evolve, explaining which ones use them and helping you master each method for completing your entire collection.

Every special evolution method & requirement in Pokemon Go

As a Pokémon trainer, I’ve noticed that most Pokémon just need a certain number of Candy to evolve, but there are quite a few exceptions to this rule. Some Pokémon have extra requirements for evolution, and it can be quite the challenge to figure out what they are!

Trade evolutions

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that there are 11 unique Pokémon in my collection that can be evolved through trading! While this is an extraordinary evolution method in Pokémon Go, it’s essential to note that it isn’t the sole way to evolve these particular Pokémon. In fact, trading merely eliminates the need for Candy to trigger evolution, but remember, you’ll still need to use Stardust!

Here are the Pokemon that evolve via trading:

Item evolutions

Similar to how certain game characters need specific items for evolution, some Pokémon also necessitate Candy, with the process of evolution consuming the required item.

Lure module evolutions

In the current scenario, there are six Pokemon that necessitate using a Lure Module to undergo evolution, and an additional one where a particular Lure Module can facilitate the process. These six Pokemon have a unique characteristic: they can only evolve in certain locations within at least one game of the core series.

Gender-specific evolutions

Some Pokémon can transform into different species or fail to evolve altogether, based on their gender, with the transformation happening for males or females respectively.

Time & weather-specific evolutions

There are ten Pokemon that can transform only during specific hours, along with one Pokemon whose evolutionary phase depends on the timing.

Note that many of these Pokemon have other requirements to fulfill before you can evolve them.

Daytime

In Pokemon Go, daytime starts about two hours after sunrise.

Buddy task evolutions

Some Pokemon require you to assign them as your buddy and accomplish certain tasks prior to their evolution. A good number of these tasks are about taking walks with the Pokemon, yet there are others that have intricate prerequisites.

Regional variants

Pokemon Go special evolutions & how to do them all

From the time of Sun and Moon, regional variations have played a role within the franchise, and these variations were quickly integrated into Pokémon GO as well.

Here’s a more straightforward way of expressing it:

Here’s one way to rephrase that sentence: Pikachu, Kanto region’s Farfetch’d, and a standard Zigzagoon from the Hoenn region can’t transform into Alolan Raichu, Sirfetch’d, Galarian Linoone, or Obstagoon respectively.

Catching Pokemon such as Alolan Exeggutor or Galarian Weezing can only be done in their final forms typically, but occasionally, special events allow you to bypass this rule.

Special cases

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that some Pokémon have unique ways to evolve or branches of evolution with specific requirements attached.

Tyrogue, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan & Hitmontop

Developing Tyrogue is quite straightforward, requiring just 25 Candy. Yet, this Scuffle Pokémon has a unique ability to transform into any of its three distinct species: Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop.

The evolution of Tyrogue is determined by its highest stat. Make sure to check its stats before you decide to evolve it.

Wurmple, Silcoon, Cascoon, Beautifly & Dustox

Wurmple can evolve into either Silcoon (which becomes Beautifly) or Cascoon (which becomes Dustox).

Unlike other evolutionary paths, it’s impossible to foresee or control which form Wurmple will eventually evolve into. If you want a particular evolution, your only option is to keep your fingers crossed and catch lots of Wurmple since luck may not always be in your favor.

Inkay & Malamar

Just as in other games, Inkay has a special evolution process that can be activated by turning your phone horizontally. If you turn your phone while focusing on your Inkay, you’ll observe the pink “Evolve” box becoming darker; the text will also flip – as long as you have enough Candy.

Rockruff & Dusk Form Lycanroc

Previously, we covered the methods for transforming into the other Lycanroc forms; however, it’s worth delving into the distinctive characteristics of Dusk Form Lycanroc individually.

To transform this Lycanroc form, you require a Rockruff that can evolve into the Dusk Form. You can identify it by checking the Pokemon’s page, where only one evolution option will be shown, unlike the two possibilities for other Rockruff.

Gimmighoul & Gholdengo

In contrast to its appearance in the games Scarlet and Violet, where it’s hidden within a chest, the Roaming Form of Gimmighoul in Pokemon Go takes on a distinctive shape. Instead, this miniature Pokemon is always accompanied by a coin.

To even get Gimmighoul, you’ll need to have Scarlet or Violet on Nintendo Switch and connect your game to your Pokemon Go account. This unlocks the Coin Bag, which is needed to find Ghimmighoul and the Coins necessary to evolve it into Gholdengo.

Keep an eye on the event schedule in Pokemon Go, as certain events can significantly simplify the process of meeting the prerequisites for a specific Pokemon evolution that trainers are aiming for.

For example, the Psychic Spectacular event running until September 22 makes Psychic-type Pokemon far more common than they typically are. That means it’s the perfect time to get Galarian Slowking, as it requires you to catch 30 Psychic-types with Galarian Slowpoke as your Buddy.

As a passionate trainer, I can’t help but share my excitement about the Psychic Cup! This unique feature is particularly useful for trainers like myself who are on the journey to evolve Charcadet into Armarouge. The Psychic Cup will provide valuable assistance in overcoming the 30 Psychic-type Pokémon you’ll encounter along the way.

Furthermore, during the Legendary Heroes event taking place from September 26 to October 1, players will have the opportunity to transform Koffing into Galarian Weezing.
