As a seasoned RPG enthusiast with countless hours spent in the vast lands of gaming lore, I eagerly anticipate this year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024. My heart skips a beat at the prospect of witnessing Square Enix’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake in action during their official program on Friday, September 27 at 21:00 JST (12:00 PM UTC). Mind you, I’ve been waiting for this one like a cat waits for its dinner – impatiently and hungrily!
I can hardly contain my excitement! Just a few days from now, it’ll be time for the annual gaming extravaganza – Tokyo Game Show 2024. From September 26th to the 29th, the world of gaming will converge at Makuhari Messe. I’m personally looking forward to being there, immersing myself in the demos for upcoming RPGs, bringing you exclusive first-hand impressions straight from the heart of the action!
For individuals unable to travel to Japan, live streams taking place throughout the event are an option. Similar to past years, we have put together a list of these streams focusing on prominent Role-Playing Game (RPG) titles that we’ve been discussing as well.
Please note that we only add streams with content that is either confirmed or highly likely. For instance, SNK has announced a Samurai Shodown action RPG, but it’s uncertain whether their live stream on Thursday will feature this project, as they tend to focus more on their primary fighting games.

Bandai Namco – Tales of Graces f Remastered
The first RPG stream from Bandai Namco will be an exception as they aim to diminish their involvement in the yearly Tokyo Game Show events. Interestingly, Tales of Graces f Remastered is the sole RPG game listed on their TGS 2024 website, although it won’t have a playable demo at the event itself. Bandai Namco has decided to host this stream ahead of TGS 2024, making it fall on the Japanese autumnal equinox holiday as well.
If you’re interested in catching the Tales of Graces f Remastered stream, make sure to note down Monday, September 23 at 7 PM Japan Standard Time (which is 10 AM UTC) on your calendar. You can find the stream on Bandai Namco’s Japanese YouTube channel around that time.
Ubisoft – Assassin’s Creed Shadows
At this year’s Tokyo Game Show 2024, Ubisoft will kick off proceedings with a game titled “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” marking the first time one of their titles is connected to us. This title marks a significant shift for the series as it is the first major release set in Japan, making it intriguing to observe how they will tailor the promotion of this game specifically for the Japanese audience.
The Ubisoft stream will go live on Thursday, September 26 at 15:00 JST (06:00 AM UTC).
Microsoft – Xbox Games Showcase
2024 will see the return of the TGS edition of Xbox Games Showcase, marking the commencement of prime-time broadcasts on Thursday, September 26 at 7 PM Japan Standard Time (10 AM Coordinated Universal Time).
Previous installments of the showcase often showcased exclusive game previews, and Microsoft had previously secured deals with companies like Atlus for Xbox-exclusive promotions on games like Metaphor: ReFantazio. Therefore, it wouldn’t be unexpected if we see similar exclusive footage again this year.
Level-5 – Fantasy Life i and Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road
Last year, Level-5 released five games, but only Megaton Musashi Wired was globally launched back in April. This year, they plan to ramp up promotion efforts for the majority of their yet-to-be-released titles.
The Level-5 event takes place on Thursday, September 26 at 13:00 UTC (22:00 JST), and it will primarily concentrate on Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road and Fantasy Life i. Additionally interesting is the new puzzle game Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, even though it’s not an RPG. Unfortunately, those eagerly waiting for Decapolice may have to wait a bit longer, as Level-5 has announced that this title has been delayed past the other titles.
Capcom – Monster Hunter Wilds
On Thursday, September 26, at 14:00 UTC, Capcom’s TGS 2024 program will wrap up the prime-time stream session, which is 23:00 JST.
In this event, all attention is undeniably drawn towards the upcoming game, Monster Hunter Wilds, as it’s the only title they plan to reveal that hasn’t hit the shelves yet when the program starts. So, it’s likely we’ll see another extended trailer showcasing new monsters and/or environments much like the one shown at last August’s Gamescom.
Aniplex – The Hundred Line
Aniplex has officially announced that their TGS 2024 program on the Friday, September 27 (18:00 JST or 09:00 AM UTC) will exclusively focus on “The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy-“.
As a devoted admirer of Kazutaka Kodaka’s creations, particularly the captivating Danganronpa series, I can hardly contain my excitement about the forthcoming live stream showcasing one of his latest projects from Too Kyo Games. This new adventure-strategy RPG is not to be missed by fellow enthusiasts!
Sega & Atlus – Metaphor: ReFantazio
If the ReFantazio trailer was missing from the recent Xbox showcase, your next opportunity to learn about the game is during Sega and Atlus’ joint event scheduled for Friday, September 27 at 19:00 JST (which is equivalent to 10:00 AM UTC). The amount of information we might receive from this stream remains uncertain as both companies plan to showcase their entire collection of games, along with any partner titles that offer playable demos during the stream.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to mention that while Sega recently unveiled “Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii,” they haven’t officially announced whether it will be part of their TGS (Tokyo Game Show) lineup yet, as we speak.
Koei Tecmo – Fairy Tail 2 and Atelier Yumia
On Friday, September 27th, I’ll be tuning in to Koei Tecmo’s stream for a peek at their lineup of games. The segments that excite me most are the Atelier segment at 17:50 JST (08:50 AM UTC), featuring live service game Atelier Resleriana and the newly announced mainline console entry Atelier Yumia. Additionally, I can’t wait for Fairy Tail 2 at 19:00 JST (10:00 AM UTC), which will include playable demo builds available at the physical venue!
At TGS 2024, one more title catching my attention is Dynasty Warriors: Origins by Koei Tecmo. Although it’s primarily a tactical action game, it could be argued that it crosses into RPG territory too, as it reimagines the story of Romance of the Three Kingdoms predominantly from the perspective of an original hero character.
Square Enix
On Friday, September 27th at 9:00 PM UTC (or 21:00 JST), Square Enix will begin their TGS 2024 live streams. As in previous years, Japanese celebrity Eiko Kano will host the event. However, this year’s broadcast promises to be more accessible for international viewers due to a greater emphasis on gameplay footage for the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.
Typically, Square Enix continues to provide captivating live broadcasts featuring games such as Fantasian: Neo Dimension and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven on their exclusive channel. For comprehensive information, be sure to visit our dedicated article about the company.
Sony Interactive Entertainment
For the initial time since the start of their PS5 era, Sony is planning a substantial physical presence at TGS. While it’s uncertain whether they’ll host a State of Play event prior, they have confirmed that they will set up a booth featuring demonstrations of PS5 games and live shows related to them at the hosting venue.
These shows will additionally be broadcast on the Japanese PlayStation YouTube channel. For your interest, there are two shows coming up – “Metaphor: ReFantazio” on Saturday, September 28 at 16:00 JST (which is 9:00 AM UTC) and “Monster Hunter Wilds” on Sunday, September 29 at 12:00 JST (3:00 AM UTC).
Nihon Falcom – The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki
Our final title is “The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki ~Farewell, O Zemuria~” by Nihon Falcom, a direct sequel to Trails through Daybreak II. Despite the staggered localization releases, this new installment will be launched synchronously with the TGS event that begins on the 26th. Therefore, most game-related streams during the event are primarily meant for enjoyment.
On Saturday, September 28th at 16:00 JST (07:00 AM UTC) and Sunday, September 29th at 10:00 JST (01:00 AM UTC), Falcom will host live performances by the Falcom jdk Band. Additionally, a Japanese talk show will air on Sunday at 12:45 JST (03:45 UTC). Since this talk show may discuss Kai no Kiseki and potentially reveal spoilers for the entire series, viewers are advised to watch with caution.
