As a cinephile with a penchant for films that explore the human condition and its relationship with tradition, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming documentary “Afternoons of Solitude.” Having delved into the rich tapestry of films that grapple with the complexities of bullfighting, I’m eager to see how Albert Serra’s unique perspective will illuminate this age-old spectacle.
International distribution rights for Albert Serra’s documentary “Afternoons of Solitude” (Tardes de Soledad) have been acquired by Films Boutique, prior to its debut in the competitive category at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
The movie represents the third project that Serra has worked on with Berlin-based Films Boutique following “Liberté”, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section in 2019, and “Pacifiction”, which made its debut in the Cannes competition in 2022, garnering nine nominations and two victories at France’s Cesar awards.
In addition to its recognition at the Lumiere Awards with wins for Best Director and Best Cinematography, as well as 11 nominations and victories in categories such as cinematography, production design, and non-Catalan language film at the Gaudi awards, “Pacifiction” also received a Best Film nomination from The Guardian and was chosen as the best film of the year by Cahiers du Cinéma.
Afternoons of Solitude” presents the image of renowned bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey, offering viewers a glimpse into the deeply personal journey of a man who bravely confronts the bull as an act of duty, respecting tradition and viewing it as an artistic endeavor. As stated, this struggle between human intellect and the raw ferocity of the beast results in fleeting elegance, a testament to the complex intersection of beauty and violence.
The movie is being made by Serra’s Andergraun Films, in collaboration with Lacima Productions from Spain, Ideale Audiences from France, and Rosa Filmes from Portugal.
A Contracorriente Films handles distribution in Spain.
