Disney received some positive momentum for the Star Wars franchise. While the lead-up to the release of the first new Star Wars film in seven years experienced some challenges, recent developments have been encouraging.
Recent reports indicate generally challenging forecasts. However, there’s positive news for Disney: The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently predicted to have the largest opening weekend in North America of any Disney film released in 2026 so far.
The Mandalorian and Grogu Could Help Lift Disney’s Summer Box Office
I’m hearing that The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is expected to make between $85 and $100 million this weekend! Even if it’s on the lower side of that estimate, it’ll still be enough to surpass the previous record.
This new Star Wars film might give Disney a boost as the busy summer movie season begins. Upcoming releases like Toy Story 5 and Moana are expected to be even bigger hits than Star Wars will be in its opening weekend.
What Are People Saying About The Mandalorian and Grogu?
While official reviews for The Mandalorian & Grogu aren’t available yet, early audience reactions have been varied. Some viewers found the movie too predictable or felt it resembled an extended episode of The Mandalorian, the original Disney+ Star Wars series. In fact, plans for a fourth season of the series were cancelled to make this movie instead.
The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place after the climactic Rebel victory over the Empire in Return of the Jedi, but before the rise of the First Order. A previously released synopsis for The Mandalorian and Grogu teased, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu.” But what kind of job could the New Republic need done that requires outsourcing to a bounty hunter?
The new direction allows the character to continue excelling as a bounty hunter, but now working on the side of good. It’s a blend of his abilities and a developing sense of morality. Initially, he’s driven purely by skill and his Mandalorian code, along with his Beskar armor. However, his bond with Grogu expands his compassion and, figuratively, softens his armor, leading him to fight for what he believes is right.
The Mandalorian and Grogu opens in theaters on May 22.
