The head of Studio Ghibli is stepping down as CEO, just three years after starting the job.
Ghibli announced the change in a statement on its official website on May 14, 2026.
Hiroyuki Fukuda, the company’s current President and CEO, will retire on June 22nd, after the company’s scheduled shareholder meeting. He is 64 years old.
Fukuda has been in his current role since 2023. He also leads Nippon Television Holdings, Japan’s leading television network, which notably purchased Ghibli in the same year.
Who is replacing Studio Ghibli’s CEO?
Kenichi Yoda, age 51, will take over from Fukuda. He currently works for both Ghibli and Nippon Television Holdings, holding positions at both companies.
In October 2023, Yoda joined Studio Ghibli as a Director, a role he’ll keep until he succeeds Fukuda later this summer. He also contributes to Nippon Television by working as a General Specialist within their content strategy and business teams.
For the past three years, Yoda has played a key role in many of Ghibli’s projects, including organizing art shows, concerts featuring music from their films, and stage versions of their popular movies.
A Kabuki adaptation of the popular film Princess Mononoke has been announced. This traditional Japanese theatrical style, dating back over 420 years, will be performed in Tokyo from July 3rd to August 23rd, 2026.
Ghibli has stated there are no plans for further changes in leadership and that Fukuda will remain a member of the board.
Studio Ghibli announced that Kenichi Yoda, a Nippon Television executive with experience in live events and who oversaw Studio Ghibli projects at the network, will become the President and CEO of their company. This leadership change will allow for closer collaboration and innovation by combining the strengths of both organizations, focusing on practical production-level partnerships.
The company plans to keep creating content as usual. This announcement follows recent news that a 2025 study found watching Studio Ghibli films can greatly improve people’s mental wellbeing and happiness.
