As a lifelong fan of TV shows and movies, I can’t help but be amazed by the sheer magnitude of viewership numbers revealed in Netflix‘s data dump for the first half of 2024. It’s fascinating to see how kids’ content continues to dominate the scene with “CoComelon” and “Peppa Pig” leading the pack.
On Netflix, their original series and films often top the charts for popular content. However, they continue to provide a vast amount of content (hundreds of millions of hours) that they’ve licensed from other parties, as demonstrated by Netflix’s extensive release of viewing data for the first half of 2024.
It’s no wonder that children’s content remains exceptionally popular, consistently outperforming expectations. On television, the long-standing favorite “CoComelon,” produced by Moonbug Entertainment, reigns supreme with a staggering total of 124.5 million views. This count doesn’t even account for the two seasons of “CoComelon Lane,” which is an original Netflix production by Moonbug, accumulating another 34.4 million views. Furthermore, Moonbug’s “Little Angel” series also attracted a significant audience of 52.4 million viewers across its five episodes.
After “CoComelon,” another popular children’s TV series was “Peppa Pig” from Britain, garnering a total of 117.4 million views over its six seasons. The spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory,” titled “Young Sheldon,” which concluded its run on CBS last spring, also made an impressive mark with 106 million views spread across its six seasons on Netflix.
Originally aired on USA Network, ‘Suits’ experienced a resurgence in popularity due to Netflix, years after its initial ending. The series accumulated an impressive 81.2 million views over its 9 seasons. Additionally, reruns of ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Breaking Bad’ also proved profitable for Netflix, garnering 47.1 million and 38.0 million views respectively.
Among other popular TV series that made it to the top of Netflix’s list are “Dexter,” produced by Showtime, with a staggering 33.2 million viewers, and HBO’s “Sex and the City,” which also drew in 33.1 million viewers.
On our earnings conference call in January, co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared that we’ve had a long history of assisting in the success of some of television’s most popular shows, such as ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘The Walking Dead.’ Due to our ability to suggest content and reach viewers, we can bring back a show like ‘Suits’ and make it a significant cultural phenomenon while also providing countless hours of pleasure for our members.
During the first half of 2024, three popular Netflix movies turned out to be animated family films that were licensed. These included “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” from Universal/Illumination (with a viewership of 80 million), “Minions” from the same studio (73 million), and “The Boss Baby” from DreamWorks Animation (64 million).
It’s important to remember that Netflix doesn’t own global rights for every TV show and movie. For instance, “The Big Bang Theory” isn’t streamable within the U.S., while shows like “Sex and the City” and “Insecure”, which are licensed from HBO, can be found on Netflix in the U.S., Latin America, and certain European countries. Additionally, some content is only accessible for a limited time; for example, “Top Gun: Maverick” featuring Tom Cruise was available on Netflix for just a few months in 2024, and it wasn’t available globally.
