As a seasoned movie buff with a knack for deciphering the subtle signs of upcoming cinematic masterpieces, I must say that Mel Gibson’s recent scouting expedition across Europe has sent my cinephile senses tingling with anticipation. The long-awaited sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” seems to be edging closer to reality, which is akin to watching a breathtaking sunrise after a long, dark night.
Mel Gibson is currently exploring potential shooting spots in Europe for a new installment of his 2004 hit movie “The Passion of the Christ”. This suggests that the long-awaited sequel may finally be moving forward with production.
This week, it’s been reported that Gibson traveled to Malta with a production crew, then headed south to the region of Puglia in Italy. There, he explored several rural areas, including the historic towns of Ginosa, Gravina Laterza, and Altamura, according to the director of the Puglia Film Commission, Antonio Parente.
Gibson’s representative, Alan Nierob, shared with EbMaster in an email that they had indeed been checking out possible locations. However, he emphasized that there isn’t much to talk about yet as it’s still very preliminary.
Nierob clarified that, as of now, there’s no concrete information available about the cast for the upcoming movie “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” as such details are yet to be finalized.
It appears Gibson has been diligently crafting the script for the sequel over several years, collaborating with “Braveheart” writer Randall Wallace. In an interview with ORMI Media in April, Wallace confirmed that the screenplay had been finished and expressed his expectation that Jim Caviezel would reprise his role as Jesus to star in it.
Gibson explained during a 2022 interview with the National Catholic Register that the concept of “Resurrection” isn’t a simple chronological story. He further emphasized that to truly grasp it, one needs to compare the core event being portrayed with everything surrounding it in the future, past, and even other dimensions – which somewhat ventures into science fiction territory.
Mel Gibson’s portrayal of Jesus Christ’s last days, titled ‘The Passion of the Christ,’ turned out to be the most financially successful independent film ever made, earning approximately $612 million globally. However, it faced criticism due to perceived anti-Semitic undertones suggesting Jewish leaders were responsible for Jesus’ crucifixion. Yet, this controversy seemed to generate more interest, as churches purchased entire cinemas for their parishioners to watch.
In the United States, the new suspense thriller directed by Mel Gibson, titled “Flight Risk” and starring Mark Wahlberg, will be distributed by Lionsgate on January 24.
