Despite a strong beginning, the fifth and final season of The Boys is proving disappointing. The show is spending too much time introducing new characters and drawn-out scenes, leaving little room to finish the main storyline or give satisfying conclusions to the characters’ journeys. With only one episode left, it feels like there’s still a lot of story left to tell.
A major problem with this season is how much focus there’s been on Soldier Boy. Characters like Butcher, Hughie, Annie, and M.M. often feel sidelined, while Soldier Boy gets a lot of screen time. Instead of bringing the main story to a satisfying conclusion, the season seems more interested in building up future spin-offs, particularly Vought Rising. It feels like we’re being set up for what’s next instead of getting a proper finale to The Boys. It’s like the show needs to finish what it started before moving on to new projects.
After finishing the latest season of The Boys, it feels like we’ve already gotten a preview of what a Soldier Boy-focused show would be like, so the idea of Vought Rising doesn’t seem as crucial. I’d actually prefer a spin-off that explores the stories of older superheroes, similar to the ones featured in season five, episode six, ‘Though the Heavens Fall’.
Why A Boys Spinoff About Elderly Supes Could Be Great
The funniest moments in the latest season of The Boys have been quick, self-contained jokes – like Rock Hard’s parody of The Thing and the realization that controlling crows isn’t very helpful, as demonstrated by Countess Crow. In the episode “Though the Heavens Fall,” the team visits Vought Villages, a retirement community for former superheroes, hoping to get information from Golden Geisha, who used to be involved with Bombsight. I really enjoyed this location and think it’s interesting enough to support an entire spin-off series.
I honestly think the retired supes from that nursing home in The Boys deserve their own show! Gen V gave us a look at the younger heroes, and I think exploring Vought Villages through the eyes of these older, forgotten supes would be incredible. It’s where they send them to fade away, but that episode, “Though the Heavens Fall,” showed me they still have so much life and potential – it could be a really powerful story about second chances.
It would be fantastic to see veteran actors deliver another memorable performance, similar to how Patti LuPone shined in Agatha All Along or Clancy Brown in The Penguin. Since Amazon is creating so many spin-offs within the Vought Cinematic Universe, a show set in Vought Villages would be a great addition.
A Nursing Home Supe Spinoff Would Be An R-Rated Cocoon
A potential spin-off of The Boys could be described as a blend of that show and the movie Cocoon. Cocoon is a charming sci-fi film about seniors who regain their youth after swimming in a pool with alien substances. Picture that concept, but with people having superpowers, and infused with the dark, satirical comedy of The Boys.
While Vought Rising seems like it’ll be entertaining, I’d really prefer a show set in Vought Villages—or even better, a third season of Gen V. Considering The Boys probably won’t have a truly satisfying ending next week, one of those would be a great alternative.
