Red Dead Redemption 2 is often praised for having one of the greatest stories ever told in a video game. Over almost 100 hours of gameplay, players experience a deeply emotional journey filled with well-developed characters, unexpected plot twists, and heartbreaking moments. Throughout the story, the game subtly hints at future events, not only for the main character, Arthur, but for the entire gang.
When you first experience the story, some conversations or events might seem unimportant. But on subsequent playthroughs, you begin to realize these moments were carefully placed clues. Whether they’re small details that trigger major plot points or subtle hints about a character’s fate, they create the feeling that the ending of Red Dead Redemption was predetermined all along.
8. Hole in the Head
An Interesting Choice of Words

Sean’s death was a huge shock for many players the first time they experienced the game. However, upon replaying, it becomes clear that his fate was likely sealed. The story strongly suggests he was destined to die, especially considering his decision to burn the Gray’s fields. Furthermore, both Arthur and Sean himself drop hints throughout the game that his death was coming.
This moment happens during the gang’s train robbery in the mission ‘Pouring Fourth Oil IV’. Sean jokes that he has a bad headache, and Arthur replies that at least he isn’t seriously injured. This is ironic, as Sean is fatally wounded a few chapters later.
7. Javier’s Deathwish
Be Careful What You Wish For
During Chapter 2, Javier shares a chilling prediction about his own fate in a casual conversation at camp. He expresses a desire to die and be buried in his native Mexico, a wish that sadly comes true as the story unfolds in the original game.
Man, it’s really sad what happens to Javier if you choose to side with Dutch instead of Arthur and John. He ends up running to Mexico, thinking he’ll find safety, but it just leads to more problems. Ultimately, John tracks him down during the events of Red Dead Redemption. It’s a small part of the story, but it really highlights how even little choices and details can have huge consequences for the characters and the overall narrative – it’s just brilliant storytelling, honestly.
6. Micah in Strawberry
It Should’ve Been Obvious
Players who finished the game discover that Micah was secretly working with the Pinkerton detectives, giving them information to hunt down the gang. The Pinkertons first appear around the same time Micah disappears, and he later ends up imprisoned in Strawberry.
Okay, so the mission totally falls apart, but then Arthur says this thing – “I heard so much bluster outta your mouth these last six months” – and it really hits you. Looking back, it’s so clear he was talking about Micah. Honestly, Micah was always running his mouth, and it should have been obvious to everyone that he was the one causing trouble!
5. The Tram Incident
No Wonder Dutch Lost His Mind After This
Dutch isn’t a reliable leader, even when things are going well. He’s often impulsive, arrogant, and seems out of touch with reality – more so than many video game characters. He’s initially very suspicious, even believing Arthur will eventually betray him, and, in his own mind, that prediction proves true.
The story takes a dramatic shift during the “Urban Pleasures” mission, specifically with a high-speed tram chase through Saint Denis. The tram eventually crashes, and Dutch hits his head badly. He immediately feels dizzy and sick, and starts behaving erratically. This culminates in him becoming completely unhinged, plotting his schemes alone in Lagras.
4. Mary’s Prophecy
Maybe She Was Right in the End
Mary Linton isn’t a fan favorite in Red Dead Redemption 2, but she’s arguably the most practical character. While Arthur’s ex-girlfriend can be frustrating, she often uses their history to get his help, then quickly leaves him without much gratitude. She explains this behavior by saying she doesn’t believe Arthur will ever leave his life of crime.
Mary’s letters especially express her concern that Arthur is making bad choices, and reveal her inner struggle with her feelings for him alongside the harsh realities of life with the gang. One letter states, “Arthur, there’s a good person inside you, but he’s constantly battling a powerful darkness, and the darkness usually wins.” Sadly, Mary proves to be right. Despite any decisions Arthur makes, it’s the complicated situation he’s in and his dedication to his criminal life that ultimately lead to his downfall.
3. The Doctor’s Diagnosis
No Coming Back from That
One of the clearest hints about what’s to come in Red Dead Redemption 2 happens when Arthur goes to the doctor in Saint Denis. The doctor’s serious face and the bad news he delivers suggest Arthur’s illness can’t be fixed. Right after this scene, you’ll either see a deer or a wolf – which one depends on how honorable your actions have been in the game up to that point.
Depending on your honour level, you’ll see either a deer or a wolf wandering through the city streets. This encounter is a significant, almost magical moment in the story, and it happens more and more as Arthur’s health declines. Many players realized during this mission that Arthur’s fate was sealed – no matter what choices you make at the end, a happy ending for him isn’t possible.
2. The Fishing Trip
A Full Circle Moment
One of the most memorable foreshadowing scenes in Red Dead Redemption 2 happens early in Chapter 2, during the mission “A Fisher of Men.” While Arthur is taking Jack fishing, they encounter Edgar Ross, a Pinkerton detective who becomes a major villain in the first Red Dead Redemption game.

It’s a full-circle moment because young Jack eventually grows up and gets revenge on Ross by killing him while he’s fishing. This shooting is the last major event in the Red Dead Redemption story, making it a fitting connection to have Jack meet the man he’ll eventually confront.
1. “Face Me to the West”
Arthur Has a Soul After All
A key hint about the game’s story appears during an optional conversation at Horseshoe Overlook. Hosea, Lenny, and Tilly talk about where they’d like to be buried, and Lenny jokes that he wants to be surrounded by friends. This is ironic because, later, both he and Hosea end up buried together near Shady Belle after a failed bank robbery in Saint Denis.
If you choose to greet Hosea during your conversation with him, Arthur will share his wishes for his burial. He says he doesn’t care much for the details, but would like to be facing west so he can watch the sunset and fondly remember good times. This is a poignant moment, as that’s precisely what happens to Arthur if you complete the story with a high honor rating.
