As a cinema enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional narratives and a keen interest in American politics, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that Jeremy Strong’s frog-suit rendition of ‘I Am What I Am’ didn’t make it to the final cut of The Apprentice. In my humble opinion, this scene, if included, would have added an unexpected layer of absurdity and campiness to the film, much like a frog to a fairy tale.

On Tuesday evening, Jeremy Strong appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, promoting his portrayal of the sinister Roy Cohn in the film, The Apprentice. The movie showcases Cohn’s tutelage of a young Donald Trump (portrayed by Sebastian Stan), as he transforms into the figure we recognize today. However, Strong lamented that an intriguing scene from their interview was omitted during post-production. In this scene, Roy Cohn reportedly had a collection of frog figurines, and Strong had planned to perform the entire George Hearn song ‘I Am What I Am’ from La Cage Aux Folles in a full-body frog suit during one of their interactions. Unfortunately, this scene did not make it into the final cut of the movie. We concur with Strong that including this scene might have provided insight into how our nation reached its current political state, but it would undeniably offer spiritual enlightenment for us as Americans and revive ‘I Am What I Am’ beyond being recognized only as the Virgin Atlantic theme song.
