Christian Bale’s latest movie is now available to stream after a theatrical release in March. However, it didn’t perform as well as expected on streaming platforms.
The movie wasn’t very popular in theaters and faded into obscurity, but now it has a second chance to find an audience on streaming, much like the story it tells. Warner Bros. has announced that The Bride! will be available on HBO Max starting May 22nd. You can also watch it on the HBO channel on May 23rd at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
A special version of The Bride! featuring American Sign Language (ASL) will be available on HBO Max the same day it releases. It’s performed by ASL Dubber Yamila Davis and directed by Rosa Lee Timm, who also directed Sinners (with BASL) and Minecraft (with ASL).
The Bride! Is Warner Bros.’ Response to Frankenstein
As a critic, I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve seen the story of Frankenstein on screen! Mary Shelley’s novel is a true classic, and Hollywood just can’t seem to get enough of it. The latest example, and a really strong one, is Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning take on the story for Netflix – a testament to the enduring power of the original work.
A few months after the original, Warner Bros. came out with their own take on the story, called The Bride! However, instead of retelling the tale of Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his creation, this Gothic romance centers on Frankenstein’s wife.
A solitary man named Frank journeys to 1930s Chicago, hoping a brilliant scientist, Dr. Euphronious, can build him a companion. Together, they bring a young, murdered woman back to life, creating a being known as The Bride. But their creation unleashes far more than they anticipated – including murder, supernatural possession, the birth of a new cultural trend, and a passionate, dangerous love affair between outlaws.
Maggie Gyllenhaal wrote, directed, and produced this Gothic horror film, featuring award-winning performances from Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, alongside Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.
Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren were the producers of the film. Carla Raji, David Webb, and Courtney Kivowitz served as executive producers.
The Bride! Had an Underwhelming Reception
Despite the growing success of films made by and about women, The Bride! didn’t quite live up to expectations. It boasted a strong cast and came after Maggie Gyllenhaal’s critically acclaimed 2021 film, The Lost Daughter, which received a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie The Bride! received a mixed reaction from critics when it was first released, earning a 58% rating. That score hasn’t changed much, and it currently sits at a ‘rotten’ 57% based on over 300 reviews. However, viewers seemed to enjoy it more, giving it a 70% approval rating.
Despite good reviews, the movie didn’t sell many tickets. Made with a budget of $80 to $90 million, it only earned $23.9 million worldwide, making it one of the year’s biggest box office failures. Other films that flopped similarly in 2026 include 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Chris Pratt’s sci-fi film Mercy, and Melania.
Despite being released directly to streaming, The Bride! has all the elements needed to be a major success. With a strong cast and availability on HBO Max, it’s poised to quickly become one of the platform’s most popular titles.
The Bride! premieres on HBO Max on May 22.
