‘I, The Executioner’ Passes $30 Million Box Office on Sixth Day of Release in Korea

As a longtime fan of Korean cinema and a connoisseur of action-comedy films, I must say that “I The Executioner” has truly taken my breath away! Breaking even on its sixth day with over $30 million in gross revenues is an astounding feat, especially considering the film’s roots in the iconic “Veteran.

The Korean action-comedy-crime film titled “I The Executioner” rapidly achieved over $30 million in box office earnings just six days after its premiere, placing it among the swiftest local films to hit such a milestone.

On the fifth day of its release, Kobis, a cinema data service run by the Korean Film Council, announced that the movie had garnered 3.71 million viewers and generated $27.2 million in ticket sales by Tuesday evening.

Early on Wednesday morning, the distributor CJ ENM announced that the film’s ticket sales had already reached over 4 million by local time at 9am. This suggests a potential box office earnings of approximately $30 million, a figure which will be verified by independent data later in the day.

CJ ENM has not revealed the production cost for this project, but they mentioned that with its current earnings, the movie has reached a point where it covers all its costs. It’s unclear if this calculation only considers net profits from Korean sales as a distributor, or if it also factors in international rights sales and the share of box office revenues from sister company CJ-CGV, which is Korea’s largest cinema chain.

Under the direction of Ryoo Seung-wan, the movie serves as a follow-up to “Veteran,” which was released nine years ago. This crime action film, combining elements of violence and humor, focuses on a police officer battling Korea’s social hierarchy. In local circles, it is referred to as “Veteran 2.” Hwang Jung-min reprises his role in the sequel, but this time he is investigating a string of vigilante murders and dealing with an overzealous coworker.

This year, the movie made its global debut in a non-competing section at Cannes. More recently, it received a special screening at the Toronto film festival.

In contrast to the usual Wednesday release date for films in Korea, “I, The Executioner” was premiered on Friday last week. This schedule change is attributed to the influence of Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving, which provides workers in South Korea with a five-day break (a weekend and three days of public holiday from Monday to Wednesday).

CJ ENM announced that the debut of “I, The Executioner” surpassed this year’s box office champion, “Exhuma,” as well as last year’s highest-grossing film “12.12: The Day,” and 2022’s “The Roundup,” which is the second installment of a crime comedy series featuring Don Lee. Moreover, they stated that ticket sales were progressing more quickly than the initial release of the 2015 hit movie “Veteran.
