‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Can’t Stop Dying in Bong Joon Ho’s Long-Awaited Return After ‘Parasite’

As a cinephile who’s seen more movies than I’ve had hot dinners and hailing from the land of Tarkovsky and Eisenstein, let me tell you that the trailer for “Mickey 17” has piqued my interest to no end. The masterful Bong Joon Ho, fresh off the success of “Parasite,” is back with a sci-fi thriller that promises to be as thought-provoking as it is visually stunning.

Warner Bros. has unveiled the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated film “Mickey 17,” a sequel to his Academy Award-winning movie “Parasite.” The upcoming sci-fi thriller is adapted from the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, with Robert Pattinson portraying the character Mickey Barnes, who is labeled as disposable in the story.

In the book, Mickey is tasked with perilous expeditions to settle a frozen world. Upon one instance of Mickey’s demise, a duplicate is generated to take over, preserving many of his recollections.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of this star-studded lineup featuring Robert Pattinson, alongside Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo. What an incredible cast!

The film “Mickey 17” was helmed by director Bong, who not only took the reins but also produced it under his company Offscreen. Alongside him, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B, as well as Dooho Choi from Kate Street Pictures, served as additional producers.

Warner Bros. has adjusted the release date for “Mickey 17” a few times, most recently moving it from March 29, 2024, to its current January 2025 slot. The change was reportedly made to ensure an Imax release window and to provide additional time to complete the project, which has been impacted by Hollywood strikes and production changes.

Bong Joon-ho’s latest production, titled “Mickey 17,” marks his first feature film release since the unprecedented success of his 2019 thriller “Parasite.” This movie, which focused on a lower-class Korean family who cleverly infiltrated an affluent household under false pretenses, followed the historical milestone of becoming the first foreign language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Beyond this prestigious honor, “Parasite” also took home awards for its original screenplay, direction, and international feature category. Other notable works by Bong Joon-ho include “Snowpiercer,” “Okja,” “Memories of Murder,” “The Host,” and “Mother.

In 2022, Robert Pattinson played the lead character of “The Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves, displaying a somber demeanor as Bruce Wayne. His recent works in the science fiction genre include appearances in Christopher Nolan’s film “Tenet” and Claire Denis’ movie “High Life.

“Mickey 17” will be released in theaters Jan. 31, 2025. Watch the trailer below.
