"Large Scale" Playtests For New Battlefield Will Start Early Next Year

As a battle-hardened gamer who’s been through the trenches of countless FPS games, I must say, I’m more than intrigued by the latest developments in the Battlefield franchise. The focus on community-driven testing, rapid prototyping, and player feedback sounds like a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry. Four studios working together on one game? That’s a force to be reckoned with!

Details concerning the upcoming installment of the Battlefield series were disclosed during a recent Electronic Arts (EA) Investors meeting. Starting early next year, they plan to initiate a substantial community-led playtesting program for this game.

During the presentation, Battlefield’s general manager Byron Beede offered additional details about the four studios working on the upcoming shooter, emphasizing their approach to creating fun experiences through frequent prototyping and player input. Beede mentioned that the teams have been actively playing the game for more than a year now, contributing significantly to the development process.

In this project, each of the four studios involved are focusing on distinct parts of the game. DICE is responsible for developing the renowned multiplayer element that the series is recognized for, with assistance from Criterion. Meanwhile, Criterion is not only contributing to the single-player campaign in the upcoming Battlefield title but collaborating with Motive on this aspect as well. Lastly, Ripple Effect is tasked with creating a unique Battlefield experience that remains shrouded in mystery.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t wait to share some exciting news! We’re crafting a fresh Battlefield journey, rooted in the distinctive Battlefield DNA that’s been receiving tremendous feedback from players. Although I can’t reveal all the details yet, let me tell you it’s testing exceptionally well and promises an unforgettable gaming experience. Stay tuned for more updates!

In his continued remarks, Beede indicated that the teams are constructing a Battlefield interconnected universe, which is set in contemporary times. He also emphasized that with the complete backing of EA, the upcoming Battlefield game boasts the “biggest, most robust, and most dedicated team” ever assembled for this franchise.

Information regarding the upcoming Battlefield is scarce, yet Vince Zampella, who leads both Respawn and Battlefield, has confirmed it will feature a contemporary setting. Additionally, he hinted that this installment in the series will have similarities with earlier Battlefield games.

In simpler terms, he mentioned that unlike Battlefield 2042 which often featured 128 players, the upcoming game will likely have fewer player counts. Moreover, the Specialist system from 2042 won’t reappear in this new title; instead, it’s returning to the traditional class-based gameplay. He added that while Battlefield 2042 wasn’t a complete failure and the team learned a lot during its development process, the aim for the upcoming entry is to make it enjoyable right from the start.

According to Zampella, he thinks it’s plausible that the upcoming Battlefield game might surpass the sales of Call of Duty, yet he admitted that both series cater to unique fan experiences and are fundamentally different.

2042’s Battlefield was unveiled in 2021, but it faced immediate criticism due to issues at launch and alterations to the traditional Battlefield structure. Since then, a significant portion of the game’s maps and systems have undergone major overhauls, with its Season 7 update, released in March, marking the end of updates.
