David Beckham Inks Paramount+ Deal to Host Alternate UEFA Champions League Telecast

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a soft spot for sports and a knack for recognizing talent, I find the news of David Beckham venturing into commentary for UEFA Champions League play on Paramount+ truly exhilarating! The man’s life experience, from his days as an English football superstar to his foray into production with the Emmy-winning docuseries “Beckham” on Netflix, makes him an ideal choice for this role.

Under a two-year agreement, David Beckham and his friends will offer insightful commentary during the UEFA Champions League matches that are streamed on Paramount+, as part of an alternative broadcast.

Through this partnership, CBS Sports’ UEFA Champions League coverage will offer a fresh viewing experience to Paramount+ subscribers in the form of the “Beckham & Friends” commentary. This special coverage will be accessible during the UEFA Champions League Semifinal Leg 2 games and the UEFA Champions League Final. The agreement also guarantees exclusive “Beckham & Friends” commentaries on Paramount+ in 2025 and 2026, as Beckham will be joined by his acquaintances from various sports, media, and entertainment fields, as per Paramount’s announcement.

David Beckham, the renowned former English football player, revealed his news on CBS Sports’ “UEFA Champions League Today” show on Tuesday. The upcoming season of 2024-25 is set to commence on September 17th, and a notable change has been made: the traditional group stage phase will be replaced by a league system that includes 36 teams.

Previously on Tuesday, Beckham shared his thoughts at the Royal Television Society gathering in London. He discussed the Emmy-winning series “Beckham,” produced by his Studio 99, airing on Netflix. “I almost disliked every moment of creating it… it was quite challenging,” he admitted.

Beckham’s agreement with Paramount+ follows a common pattern among sports broadcasters, offering multiple perspectives on the same event through diverse commentator teams and additional features. For instance, in the U.S., ESPN’s “ManningCast” stands out – it’s a well-liked live broadcast series for NFL “Monday Night Football” games, hosted by football legends Peyton and Eli Manning, currently in its fourth season.

CBS Sports, in partnership with UEFA Champions League, Authentic, and Relevent Sports Group, will co-produce “Beckham & Friends” for Paramount+.

The UEFA Champions League is one of the over 1500 soccer matches that can be streamed yearly on Paramount+. This platform also serves as the streaming hub for CBS Sports’ live sports programming, which encompasses NFL games, college football and basketball, golf tournaments, and various soccer events such as the UEFA Champions League and the National Women’s Soccer League.
