As a seasoned movie critic with a soft spot for heartfelt dramas that resonate deeply and challenge societal norms, I must say that “My Home Unknown” has piqued my interest. The film’s poignant narrative, centered around the struggle of a homeless artist battling mental illness, seems to strike a chord with my own experiences in navigating the complexities of human emotions through cinema.
Gravitas Ventures secures distribution rights for the entire North America region for the drama “My Home Unknown,” a film helmed by debut director Yaz Canli, who is also the screenwriter and producer of this project. (Previously associated with “Monster Hunter.”)
The movie features Diane Foster, founder of WallyBird Productions, as one of its co-stars and the producer. It is also executive produced by Lawrence Kasanoff from Threshold Entertainment, known for the “Mortal Kombat” series, and Oscar winner Jimmy Ienner. The music is provided by Michael Lloyd, famous for “Dirty Dancing”, and Greg O’Connor, a multiple Emmy winner.
‘My Unfamiliar Sanctuary’ – The Story of Mina (Yaz Canli), a talented artist grappling with homelessness who tragically loses her cherished companion, her dog. As she descends into the tumultuous abyss of a mental health crisis, she embarks on a quest to rediscover home. Torn between remnants of her Muslim heritage and the grim realities of her current situation – substances, loss of faith, abuse, and haunting inner voices – Mina must learn to cope with profound sorrow and embrace the compassion of others to pave a new path. This tale is an unvarnished and unflinching portrayal of a woman’s struggle with mental illness, life on the streets, and the bravery it takes to find one’s way home.
Canli stated, ‘I aimed to convey a narrative that highlights the internal battles of a soul instead of just the surface-level aspect that is often superficially judged.’ Everyone is someone’s child or relative. We all share common needs like breathing, eating, and resting. We all have identities. And true empathy starts when we refuse to turn away.
Last year, the movie made appearances at several film festivals, such as Dances With Films: L.A., where it had its initial screening in 2023, then moved on to The Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto and the Micheaux Film Festival in Los Angeles. Later this fall, Gravitas Ventures plans to distribute the movie both in theaters and on digital platforms.
Gravitas is excited to share ‘My Home Unknown’ this autumn. This impactful movie is certain to stir and captivate viewers throughout North America, as stated by Gravitas’ representative, Mackenzie Maguire.
The agreement concerning home-based rights was negotiated by Mackenzie Mcguire acting for Gravitas, as well as Brandon Milostan and Graham Fenton representing the filmmakers from Greenberg Glusker LLP.
