As a lifelong admirer of Pixar and their groundbreaking storytelling, I find it deeply disheartening to learn about the reported efforts to dilute or suppress queer themes in their movies. The creative process behind these masterpieces has always been an inspiration to me, and I believe that true art should reflect the diverse experiences and identities of its audience.

In the movie “Inside Out 2“, there’s a mystery about Riley having a hidden secret. However, it has been reported that Disney allegedly requested changes to make Riley appear less inclined towards same-sex relationships. This was done by portraying her relationship with an older girl as platonic and adjusting the lighting and tone to reduce any romantic undertones, according to some former Pixar employees. The leadership team reportedly felt uneasy about what IGN calls “queer themes”.

According to reports, Disney executives are still pointing to a same-sex kiss scene as the reason for Lightyear‘s (2022) massive box office failure, despite the scene being initially removed and later reinstated following staff protests. However, this assertion is disputed by an insider who stated: “It’s still a common narrative among leadership that Lightyear bombed because it featured a queer kiss, but that’s not the reason the movie failed.” Contrary to this, Inside Out 2, a film about a teenage girl with an infatuation for a female hockey player and her pink hair streak, is currently the highest-grossing animated movie of all time. Regardless of the lighting, that’s a clear representation of LGBTQ+ themes.
