As a longtime movie enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of television’s biggest night, I must say that this year’s Emmys, while not setting the world on fire, have certainly shown signs of improvement. After several years marred by strikes, virtual ceremonies, and clashes with sports events, it’s refreshing to see the Emmys regain some of its former glory.
Last Sunday, ABC attracted approximately 6.87 million viewers for the Emmys, which represents a 54% increase compared to the previous event held on Fox earlier this year, where only around 4.3 million viewers watched.
For adults aged 18 to 49, the broadcast earned a rating of 1.02, which represents a 17% increase from the 0.87 rating in January. According to ABC, this year’s 76th Emmys telecast attracted the award show’s highest overall audience in the past nine years, since it was last aired on CBS in 2021. Furthermore, the total viewership for this year’s broadcast was 8% higher than ABC’s previous airing in 2020, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and was a virtual telecast with 6.39 million viewers.
The Emmy Awards in January faced low viewership numbers as they were rescheduled from their original September 2023 slot due to Hollywood strikes and broadcast opposite an NFL playoff match. Compared to the usual Emmys ceremony held in September 2022 with 5.9 million viewers, it was considered a disappointing turnout at that time, representing a 25% decrease from the 7.4 million viewers in 2021. However, this year’s telecast managed to surpass those numbers.
On Sunday, our show went up against the NFL broadcast, but the Texans versus Bears game wasn’t as high-profile as the playoff match that had diverted viewers from the Emmys in January. Previously, a disagreement between Disney and DirecTV had led to a two-week interruption of Disney-owned channels for DirectTV subscribers, which was speculated to affect Emmy ratings. However, access to ABC and other networks was reinstated on Saturday.
All in all, it’s been a string of difficult years for TV’s biggest night.
In her critique, Alison Herman, writing as EbMaster’s critic, described last Sunday’s Emmys as “dull” and “quiet,” expressing that it can be challenging to make an annual awards event feel unique when it takes place twice in one year. She further noted that the awards largely represented a lackluster period in television history rather than offering a contrasting perspective.
