As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who’s seen the original trilogy more times than I care to admit, I wholeheartedly agree with Donald Glover‘s sentiments. The galaxy far, far away has been a source of endless joy and escapism for me since my childhood days, but lately, it seems like the series has taken on a bit too much gravity.
According to Donald Glover, who portrayed Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story and will reprise the role in an upcoming film, he finds that the Star Wars series can sometimes be overly serious. When asked about his vision for his new Lando project, Glover expressed a desire to make it enjoyable and fun.
Glover expressed that it’s not surprising that many contemporary entertainments, such as the Star Wars series, have a serious tone due to the setting of their worlds. However, he feels that Star Wars sometimes gets overly serious, and he aims to lighten the mood with his upcoming Lando project.
In his own words as a Star Wars enthusiast, he emphasized the significance of having fun. He admitted it can be difficult to find joy given the current circumstances, but acknowledged that even in challenging times, there is a unique bond that serious issues create among us. He understood the gravity of the situation, yet believed we have a duty to seek pleasure. Currently, he feels that enjoyment seems scarce.
Star Wars is a favorite of mine, yet at times it can get incredibly intense. Sometimes it’s downright too intense,” he remarked. “Matters concerning the Skywalkers always seem so grave. As for Lando, I believe his most appealing trait is his roguish nature. I think that aspect resonates with many, and maybe he’d say something like, ‘This war is just nuts. I need cash,’ which I think we all can understand. I aim to inject some fun into Star Wars. I simply want it to be entertaining.
Originally, Glover had the idea to create a Lando TV series for Disney+, but this concept has evolved and is now being developed as a full-length movie that he’s co-writing with his brother, Stephen Glover.
Earlier this year, Donald Glover mentioned that one reason he agreed to work on the film is due to the high degree of creative control he’s been granted. This extensive control enables him to maintain a unique and consistent perspective for the project.
He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he believes he has sufficient control over his projects, and while others might label him as a control freak, it’s because controlling the vision ensures it remains unique. When the vision is clear, people are more drawn to it. Conversely, if the vision lacks clarity, interest wanes because viewers may feel they could have created it themselves. In our current era, where anyone can produce virtually anything (from TikTok videos to documentaries, puppetry, or yarn stop-motion), there’s less appeal in seeing something that seems within one’s grasp.
As of now, it appears that the Lando Calrissian standalone movie is still in its initial stages without any confirmed information about the cast (only Donald Glover has been confirmed as Lando), director, or release date. However, this film is one of several upcoming Star Wars projects currently being developed. These include a film featuring Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey and another directed by Logan’s James Mangold. Additionally, The Mandalorian’s Dave Filoni is working on a new Star Wars movie, as well as Taika Waititi.
The initial one among these is scheduled for release in May 2026, and it’s said to be the Rey movie from award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. This will mark the first new Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
