Madden 25 Cover Athlete Christian McCaffrey Injured, Will Miss 4 Games

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of familiar disappointment upon hearing about Christian McCaffrey‘s injury. It seems like every time a promising athlete graces the cover of Madden NFL, fate conspires to strike them down, much like how my team always seems to lose when I play with them in-game.

Back in the early months of this year, the running back for the San Francisco 49ers, who was also recognized as the Offensive Player of the Year last season, Christian McCaffrey, graced the cover of Madden NFL 25. However, due to calf discomfort and Achilles tendinitis, he has been put on injured reserve, which means he will be out for at least the first four games of the upcoming season.

According to ESPN, when Christian McCaffrey was part of the Carolina Panthers in the years 2020 and 2021, he had a history of injuries and only played in a total of 10 games across those two seasons. However, since joining the San Francisco 49ers, McCaffrey has featured in 32 out of their 33 matches. Lately, his appearance on Madden NFL 25’s cover has revived discussions about the supposed “Madden curse.

Prior to 1998, John Madden was frequently the main character on video games named after him. As NFL players started appearing on the covers, a theory emerged that these athletes would be affected by the so-called “Madden curse,” which supposedly leads to either an injury or a poor season for them. CBS Sports recently examined this alleged curse by investigating the subsequent fates of the last 24 individuals who graced the cover. It was found that 14 of these athletes experienced either injuries or a decline in their performance afterward.

Undoubtedly, it seems quite plausible that the Madden Curse arises due to football being an incredibly demanding and physically grueling sport that even the most robust bodies can wear down over time. It’s not uncommon for players to miss games because of injuries during their careers. However, this likely won’t deter those who subscribe to the Madden Curse conspiracy theories from viewing McCaffrey as the newest casualty.
