The 28 Years: The Bone Temple sequel’s fate has seemingly been revealed.
The movies 28 Years Later and its sequel were filmed at the same time. 28 Years Later came out in June 2025, and the sequel followed in January 2026. Although the ending of The Bone Temple suggests a third film to finish the series, its future is uncertain because the second movie didn’t do well in theaters.
Actor Alfie Williams has hinted on Instagram that a sequel to 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is in the works. He posted photos of himself practicing archery with the caption “It’s Great to be Back!” and a winking emoji. You can see the post below.
In the first two movies, Williams plays Spike, a young boy who’s left his home island and is now making his own way in the mainland. Spike is skilled with a bow and arrow, and at the end of The Bone Temple, he and Kellie (played by Erin Kellyman) are fleeing from infected people when Jim (Cillian Murphy) steps in to help.
Naomie Harris, who originally played Jim in the movie 28 Days Later that started the popular zombie horror series, was already confirmed to appear in The Bone Temple before its release, hinting at a bigger part in the final film. In December 2025, news came out that a third movie, 28 Years Later, was in development, with Harris potentially returning and Alex Garland writing the screenplay. Even though The Bone Temple didn’t make much money at the box office – earning only $58.5 million worldwide on a $63 million budget – Williams’ announcement suggests the story will still reach its conclusion with a third film.
Despite costing $60 million to make, 28 Years Later was a financial hit, bringing in $151.3 million worldwide. Although a sequel was made quickly due to back-to-back filming, it didn’t perform as well as the first movie, even though critics and audiences generally liked it more. 28 Years Later received an 88% rating from critics and a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, The Bone Temple earned even higher praise, with a 92% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and an 88% ‘Verified Hot’ audience score.
I’m so excited to hear that along with Spike, Jim, and Kellie, we’ll likely see Sam, Jim’s daughter (played by Maiya Eastmond), and both Samson and Jamie back for the next movie! It’s great to know Samson, who Chi Lewis-Parry plays so well, was actually cured of the Rage Virus by Dr. Kelson before he passed away. And I was really hoping Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) would return, especially after being separated from his son at the end of the last film – it left me wanting more of his story!
The next movie in the series is expected to bring all the storylines together, particularly after Jim wasn’t featured in 28 Weeks Later and 28 Years Later. A key part of this will be explaining what happened to Selena (Naomie Harris), who survived the first film with Jim but isn’t with him or their son Sam at the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
