The upcoming Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, set to release on July 31st, may be based on a classic Spider-Man story from over 30 years ago. Marvel is sharing details about the film, including appearances by characters like Hulk and the Punisher, and releasing trailers that give fans a glimpse of Tom Holland’s next adventure.
Despite what we’ve seen, there are still many mysteries surrounding the upcoming film, Brand New Day. Fans are buzzing with theories, like the possibility of Sadie Sink portraying Jean Grey from the X-Men. The trailers also hint at significant changes for Peter Parker and his powers as Spider-Man. One particularly intriguing scene shows Peter emerging from a web-like cocoon, leading to a lot of speculation about what that means for his abilities.
Unconfirmed reports suggest the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline might transform Peter Parker into the Man-Spider. This would involve the mutation that gave him powers continuing to develop, making him increasingly spider-like with extra arms and the ability to shoot webbing from his wrists. If this happens, Brand New Day could adapt a popular story arc from the classic Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
Brand New Day Looks Like A Remake Of A Spider-Man: The Animated Series Arc
Back in 1995, the animated series Spider-Man told the story of Man-Spider, and it looks like the Brand New Day storyline might be adapted next. The show’s second season, called “Neogenic Nightmare,” featured a central plot where Peter Parker struggled with his abilities and ultimately transformed into Man-Spider. This arc was a highlight of the Spider-Man cartoon, and many fans consider it one of the best Spider-Man stories ever told.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited about Brand New Day. It seems like they’re drawing from the overall ‘Man-Spider’ storyline, but also weaving in elements from the ‘Neogenic Nightmare’ arc, which is fantastic. If Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey – and I’m hoping she is! – it would really connect the film to that specific storyline. It makes sense, too, because in Spider-Man: The Animated Series‘ Man-Spider arc, Peter actually went to the X-Men for help, given their expertise with genetic mutations. It’s cool to see them potentially pulling from that!
Although Jean Grey didn’t appear in Neogenic Nightmare, she could represent the X-Men in Brand New Day. Peter might go to her for help understanding his new powers, especially now that the Avengers no longer remember him after the events of No Way Home, cutting him off from their support. The trailer suggests Peter is already looking to Bruce Banner for guidance, so asking a mutant like Jean Grey for help wouldn’t be surprising.
The Punisher’s appearance in Brand New Day further connects to the Neogenic Nightmare storyline. Similar to The Animated Series where the Punisher teamed up with Kraven the Hunter to capture Spider-Man and temporarily cure his Man-Spider form, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher could play a comparable role in Brand New Day, though without Kraven’s assistance.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Will Almost Certainly Have New Twists On The Neogenic Nightmare Story
While the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline shares similarities with the Spider-Man: The Animated Series arc, “Neogenic Nightmare,” it doesn’t have to follow the same path. A key difference is that Vulture, who played a significant role in the original ending—stealing Spider-Man’s youth and causing him to become Man-Spider—is already dead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming. This means Brand New Day will likely need a new conclusion.
I was a little surprised the Hulk didn’t show up in Neogenic Nightmare, but it sounds like Bruce Banner is definitely going to be involved in Brand New Day. Honestly, I’m really curious to see how they use him. It could seriously shake things up for Peter! I’m getting a bit of a Kurt Connors/Lizard vibe – maybe he’ll be another mentor figure helping Peter understand what’s going on with his mutation, like he did in The Animated Series. Either way, I have a feeling Bruce’s appearance is going to make the Man-Spider storyline a lot more interesting.
Beyond the main story, Brand New Day differs from Neogenic Nightmare in a few key ways. While Peter wasn’t still recovering from being forgotten like he was in The Animated Series, he’ll be focused on reconnecting with Mary Jane and Ned in the new movie. Also, The Scorpion and The Hand will be major villains, unlike in the Neogenic Nightmare storyline where they played a smaller role.
These are just the differences Marvel has shared up to this point. The upcoming Brand New Day movie is a big live-action project for the MCU, and we can expect even more surprises and unique elements. Peter Parker’s story will also connect to other MCU films and events, like Avengers: Secret Wars. Overall, Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be the most faithful adaptation we’ll see of the ‘Neogenic Nightmare’ storyline from Spider-Man: The Animated Series.
