The Emmys Are Not Traitors

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for international productions and a soft spot for reality shows, I must admit that I was thoroughly delighted by the victory of “The Traitors” at this year’s Emmys. Having spent a considerable amount of time immersed in the world of Dutch television (for research purposes, of course), I can attest to their knack for creating engaging and innovative reality formats.

Tonight’s first award goes to a program that everyone can support – The Traitors. After a season filled with trying to decide where to don a robe, The Traitors has taken the title of Outstanding Reality Competition Program, ousting Drag Race yet again. During the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend, Alan Cumming snatched the award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, breaking RuPaul’s eight-win streak and demonstrating the voters’ confidence. It’s quite an accomplishment for a show that has sparked tartan fashion, deception between individuals, and Taylor Swift fan video edits.

In a genuine manner, Cumming expressed gratitude towards Scotland for being “a stunning co-star”, but also acknowledged one unique nation for its cultural impact. “I would also like to express my thanks to Holland,” he stated on stage, “as I believe we don’t show our appreciation enough. Many of the shows such as Traitors originated in Holland, so it appears they must have something special in their water.” He continued, “Let’s discover it, let’s drink it, and if only America’s problems could be solved that easily.” Alas, Alan, it’s not quite that simple.
