‘Baby Reindeer’ Wins Four Emmys as Richard Gadd Proclaims: ‘You Don’t Need Big Stars’ or IP ‘To Have a Hit’

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must admit that “Baby Reindeer” has left quite an impact. The series, which won four Emmys, is a testament to the power of storytelling and the courage it takes to push boundaries in television.

Netflix’s stalker drama “Baby Reindeer” won four Emmys at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Additionally, it won awards not only in the category for limited or anthology series, but also recognized Richard Gadd for his writing and acting skills, as well as Jessica Gunning’s exceptional performance in her supporting role.

For the third time performing under the name “Baby Reindeer”, creator and lead actor Richard Gadd clinched the top award. Amidst the current struggles of the industry, which he referred to as a “financial downturn”, Gadd expressed optimism, suggesting that there’s a viable path toward recovery.

He asserted, “I’m convinced that every obstacle has been overcome only by those ready to dare, and it seems clear from ‘Baby Reindeer’ that there’s no single path to success. It doesn’t require well-known actors, established intellectual properties, ongoing series, or universal storylines to create a hit.

He emphasized that a common element in all television success is compelling storytelling, storytelling relevant to our current era. He encouraged us to be bold, challenge norms, delve into discomfort, and even risk failure, as these steps can lead to true achievement.

The little Reindeer received three additional recognitions at the Primetime Emmys: Nava Mau, like Gunning, received a nomination for supporting actress, while Tom Goodman-Hill was recognized in the supporting actor category, and Weronika Tofilska was nominated for directing. All of them, alongside Gadd and Gunning, were making their first appearances as nominees.

Moreover, last week’s Creative Arts Emmys saw the series garnering accolades for its exceptional casting and editing work, while also receiving nominations in categories such as contemporary costuming and music supervision.

In my humble opinion, “Baby Reindeer” is a gripping film that traces the journey of an ambitious comedian, who unwittingly falls into the sights of a relentless stalker. As this chilling pursuit escalates, our protagonist is compelled to confront a long-suppressed trauma lurking within his psyche.

Approximately a week following its debut, “Baby Reindeer” climbed to the top position on Netflix’s television rankings in the United Kingdom, where it originated. In the United States, the program managed to reach the second spot. Eventually, “Baby Reindeer” reached the tenth most-watched show on Netflix ever, but it has since fallen out of the top 10 rankings.

Nevertheless, the show has attracted some criticism due to questions about how faithfully Gadd portrayed his actual real-life stalking incident. Following the release of “Baby Reindeer”, a Scottish woman named Fiona Harvey alleged that she was the model for the character Martha and sued Netflix, seeking $170 million in compensation.
