Mau prefers to use a different term for that word, as he admires those who are involved in organizing and activism greatly. Instead, he describes himself as an advocate.
Mau’s nomination for exceptional supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie marks her as the first transgender woman to be recognized in this particular category.
She gets a bit choked up when discussing interactions with trans youth who express gratitude for her visibility. “It brings a tear to my eye,” Mau noted.
She remembers being bestowed with the CMF Barrier Breaker Award at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. “This recognition made me ponder about the challenges faced by trans individuals, as we often encounter and shatter numerous barriers merely to exist,” Mau expressed. “To have the opportunity to chase our dreams is extraordinary and trailblazing.

When asked about her trans role models and motivations, Mau mentions the cast from “Pose,” Jamie Clayton in “Sense 8,” independent filmmaker and actor Rain Valdez, and the 2016 web series “Her Story” starring Angelica Ross and Jen Richards. Mau stated, “Each of these works plays a significant role in who I am.
Mau also said her dream role is to play a witch.
