As a movie buff who has seen my fair share of films tackling social issues, I must say that “Red, White and Blue” is a powerful and timely piece that deserves the widest audience possible. Having witnessed the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse healthcare provisions given under Roe v. Wade, it’s heartening to see a film like this that not only sheds light on the reality of accessing abortions but also humanizes the experience.
The short film titled ‘Red, White and Blue,’ which tackles the topic of emergency abortion access, is planning a nationwide tour featuring famous personalities hosting screenings in different cities. This initiative aims to bring attention to this matter prior to the upcoming presidential election in November.
Under the direction of Nazrin Choudhury and featuring Brittany Snow, this project has been hailed as “a film that’s crucial for today and needs to be watched immediately by a wide audience,” as per Jane Fonda, who is part of the host committee for an upcoming screening. The launch is being led by Adrienne Becker’s Level Forward, with proceeds going towards various reproductive rights organizations.
In a small town in Arkansas, a single mother working as a waitress named Snow is desperate for an abortion but cannot obtain one within her state. Forced to leave with her young daughter, Snow’s journey takes them across state lines to Illinois. Through her character, the movie portrays that the true nature and emotional repercussions of the procedure are much more complex than commonly perceived.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that on September 18th, two special screenings of a 23-minute film are scheduled. In Los Angeles, the WGA theater will host Lorraine Bracco, Laverne Cox, Octavia Spencer, and Fonda as our esteemed hosts. Post-screening, Bracco will engage in a captivating conversation with journalist Jessica Yellin. Meanwhile, in New York City, Urban Zen has planned an equally enchanting event, featuring Lise Evans, Carola Jain, Donna Karan, Beth Kojima, Crystal McGuire, and Lizzie Tisch as the host committee. Both events aim to raise funds for the Purple Parlor Fund, a cause close to our hearts that seeks to organize additional screenings in crucial swing states ahead of the election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
The strategy for releasing this project was partially created by Level Forward’s Impact Advisory Group, which consists of notable members like Reverend Robert Schenck, who played a significant role in the swing state screenings, and LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter. Additionally, Julie Kamins, Lauri Firstenberg, and Barbara Bridges, co-executive producers of “Red, White and Blue”, have provided input for the movie and its promotional efforts. Furthermore, contributions have been made by the Stardust Foundation and Lowell and Diane Wightman as well.
As a passionate cinephile, I eagerly share that this movie, despite being just 23 minutes in length, is an unforgettable journey. The complexities surrounding reproductive rights in America continue to be a tense battleground.
