Modder Adds Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Walz To Crazy Taxi

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that this year has been nothing short of unprecedented, even by gaming standards. The latest twist in the US Presidential election has taken me by surprise – and not just because it’s affecting real life, but because it’s found its way into one of my favorite arcade games: Crazy Taxi.

In a remarkable and unprecedented twist, this year’s US Presidential election has proven to be one of the most unpredictable in history. Recently, the spotlight has fallen on Governor Tim Walz, Vice Presidential candidate and self-proclaimed gaming enthusiast, who is now the main character in an enthusiast-made adaptation of Sega’s Crazy Taxi game.

The (Sega) genesis of this creation came from a New York Times profile on Walz that revealed he was such a dedicated Dreamcast player that his wife confiscated the system from him. When IGN tracked down Walz’s Dreamcast, one of the previous owners said that a copy of Crazy Taxi was found inside of it. That gave video game developer Edward La Barbera the idea to add Walz to Crazy Taxi, while including his running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, as a special guest character.

According to MPR News, La Barbera shared that he drew inspiration for his work from former President Bill Clinton’s appearance in NBA Jam. He subsequently incorporated vocal snippets from both Governor Tim Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris into the game, and also opted to include ambient details reminiscent of Minnesota, Walz’s home state.

La Barbera explained, “I decided on a relaxed, Minnesota-style flannel ensemble for Tim since it was simpler to put together than a suit. This led me to envision transforming the setting from California’s sunny landscape to a chilly Minnesota one. So I swapped out palm trees for snow-dusted pines, replaced the stadium with Target Field, and opted for the Mall of America instead of a regular mall.

I’ve gotten my hands on Tim Walz’s mod by Barbera, and it’s a blast! However, to enjoy the gameplay, you’ll need to run it through an emulated version of Crazy Taxi. It’s like stepping back into the world of arcade cabbies!
