‘Salem’s Lot’ Trailer: Vampires Are Unleashed in Long-Delayed Stephen King Movie

As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for all things Stephen King, I must say that the first trailer for “Salem’s Lot” has me positively giddy! Gary Dauberman, who’s been spinning tales from the King canon like a pro, is now sinking his teeth into one of the master’s most famous yarns. The cast looks promising, with familiar faces like Alfre Woodard and William Sadler gracing our screens.

Screenwriter Gary Dauberman, known for “Annabelle,” is delving into one of Stephen King’s iconic stories as seen in the debut trailer for the upcoming “Salem’s Lot,” which will be available to stream on Max starting October 3.

Salem’s Lot, as depicted in Stephen King’s 1975 novel, centers around Ben Mears (played by Lewis Pullman), a well-established author who returns to the small town of Jerusalem’s Lot, where he grew up, to pen his next book. This decision is sparked by a past encounter with an eerie old house in the town. However, upon his return, the house is bought by Kurt Barlow (William Sadler), an ancient vampire, who uses his human associate Richard Straker (Pilou Asbæk) to convert the residents of the town into vampires. As the number of affected locals continues to rise, Mears and his fellow humans find themselves in a desperate struggle for survival.

Alongside Pullman, Sadler, and Asbæk, the movie features Makenzie Leigh portraying Susan Norton, Ben’s romantic interest; Bill Camp playing the role of high school teacher Matthew Burke; Alfre Woodard as Dr. Cody; Spencer Treat Clark as Mike Ryerson, a gravedigger; and John Benjamin Hickey takes on the character of Father Callahan, who is significant in King’s book series “The Dark Tower” as a future major character.

2019 saw the initial announcement of the film, with plans for a cinema release set for September 2022. However, due to several postponements, it was eventually moved from theaters to streaming on Max.

Gary Dauberman was responsible for both writing and directing the movie, having penned the scripts for the 2017 and 2019 adaptations of Stephen King’s “It” and “It: Chapter Two.” He is also recognized for his contributions to various spin-offs within the “The Conjuring” series, such as “Annabelle,” “Annabelle: Creation,” and “The Nun.” Additionally, he wrote and directed “Annabelle Comes Home,” released in 2019. James Wan, the founder of the “Conjuring” franchise, serves as the film’s producer.

The novel “Salem’s Lot” by Max isn’t the first time it has been adapted. Four years after its publication, it was transformed into a two-part CBS miniseries with David Soul portraying Mears. This adaptation received three Emmy Award nominations. A feature film sequel to the miniseries, titled “A Return to Salem’s Lot,” came out in 1987. In 2004, a new miniseries adaptation starring Rob Lowe debuted on TNT. More recently, in 2021, Epix premiered “Chapelwaite,” a series inspired by King’s prequel short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” with Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire in the leading roles.
