Venice Competition Title ‘Love’ Sells to Further European Territories (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile who’s been around the block a few times, I must say that the news about Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud’s film “Love” has me all a-flutter! The accolades it’s been receiving, from Venice to Busan, are simply breathtaking. It seems the world is indeed in dire need of films like “Love,” as Lefteris Adamidis so eloquently put it – a gentle, compassionate, and intelligent piece that resonates deeply with audiences today.

The Norwegian movie “Love” directed by Dag Johan Haugerud, which debuted at the Venice competition and won the Bisato d’Oro award for film critics, has been bought for distribution in more European regions.

The film will screen in Busan’s World Cinema strand next month.

The movie has been granted distribution rights in countries such as Greece, the Baltic region, former Yugoslavia, Poland, and Hungary. In Greece it’s known as “One from the Heart”, in the Baltics it won the title of “Best Film Baltics”, MCF MegaCom is responsible for its distribution in ex-Yugoslavia, “Aurora” is the title under which it will be shown in Poland, and in Hungary it’s distributed by “Vertigo Media”.

The movie has been bought for distribution in North America (Strand Releasing), France (Pyramide), the United Kingdom and Ireland (Modern Films), Germany and Austria (Alamode), Italy (Wanted Cinema), Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg (September Film), Spain (Filmin), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Pilot Film), and Switzerland (Xenix Film).

Lefteris Adamidis, the head of acquisitions at One from the Heart, shared with EbMaster: “Dionne Warwick sings ‘What the World Needs Now Is Love’, and we wholeheartedly agree. We believe that films like ‘Love’ – tender, empathetic, and insightful – are exactly what our world is yearning for.

The story revolves around Marianne, a practical medical professional, and Tor, a caring attendant, both shying away from traditional romances. Following a conversation where Tor shares his experiences with casual liaisons with men, Marianne ponders if such unconventional intimacy might also suit her lifestyle.

The movie is a continuation of “Sex” by Haugerud, which debuted at the Berlinale Panorama this year. It revolves around two male companions, each involved in heterosexual relationships, as they begin to challenge societal norms concerning their sexual identities in distinct manners.

As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate the continuation of the thematically connected film trilogy with its next installment, “Dreams.” This upcoming movie tells the story of a young woman who finds herself captivated by the charms of her female mentor, immersing us in a tale of love and mentorship.

Berlin-based sales agent M-Appeal are handling international rights for the trilogy of films.

In an interview with EbMaster, Haugerud emphasized the importance of discussing physical attraction and related feelings. He explained that initiating such discussions is a positive step, as communication plays a crucial role in all three films, serving as the foundation for the main events.

Love,” a production from Motlys, was created by Yngve Sæther and Hege Hauff Hvattum, with additional co-production assistance from the Oslo Film Fund.
