As a documentary enthusiast who has had the privilege of witnessing some extraordinary lives unfold on screen, I am genuinely excited about “The Last Spy.” The story of Peter Sichel, a 102-year-old CIA spymaster, promises to be a captivating journey through history, offering unique insights into the roots of our modern conflicts and the personal toll of espionage.
Documentary production company Dogwoof is handling global distribution for “The Last Spy,” a biographical film about CIA spy master Peter Sichel, who celebrates his 102nd birthday today.
In my humble opinion, this movie was masterfully crafted by the talented Katharina Otto-Bernstein, a filmmaker who has garnered Emmy nominations for her work as a producer on “Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures” and “The Price of Everything.” Notably, Dogwoof played a role in both productions. Recently, she produced the award-winning “Joyland,” which won the Cannes jury prize, and served as an executive producer on Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” which debuted at Cannes. So, if you’re a fan of thought-provoking cinema with a pedigree of success, this film should be right up your alley.
“The Final Agent” delves into the history of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) through an insider’s lens. Sichel uncovers the origins of modern-day conflicts and the impact that espionage had on his personal life. Sichel, a German Jew who fled fascism, experienced a dramatic odyssey leading to his career with the CIA. He narrates his tale with a generous sprinkling of wit and humor.
The in-progress documentary grants an exclusive look at Sichel himself, along with his family, renowned Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein who won a Pulitzer Prize, and various prominent political journalists.
Dogwoof aims to launch the film in early 2025.
Sichel expressed his joy about sharing his century-long life experiences in the movie. He’s witnessed both the terrors and marvels of the past hundred years, and he hopes that humanity will adopt wiser ways of living to ensure survival.
Otto-Bernstein expressed: “Peter narrates his life with style and a sharp sense of humor, while delving deeply into the realm of foreign meddling and covert intelligence with a rightful air of expertise. At 102 years old, he is one of the last surviving witnesses to the roots of numerous contemporary political and social disputes, and the critical link between history and the present.
