As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both historical dramas and innovative storytelling, I am truly excited about this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival. The opening film, “11 Rebels,” directed by the esteemed Shiraishi Kazuya, promises to be a powerful start to the festival, especially given its roots in the late Kasahara Kazuo’s screenplay and featuring the talented Yamada Takayuki and Nakano Taiga.
The period thriller “11 Rebels” will kick off the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival next month.
Under the direction of acclaimed filmmaker Shiraishi Kazuya, who worked with an unpublished script penned by the late Kasahara Kazuo, the movie features prominent actors Yamada Takayuki and Nakano Taiga.
The festival organizers in Tokyo anticipate that this strong movie will kick off the event with a bang. The festival takes place from October 28th to November 6th, in the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza district.
Additionally, it was announced that the closing act of the festival will be the French-Italian comedy “Marcello Mio.” In this movie, Chiara Mastroianni portrays a character who transforms into her actual father, renowned director Marcello Mastroianni. The film, helmed by Christophe Honore, debuted at the Cannes Film Festival’s competition section in May, marking its global premiere.
Chiara Mastroianni is part of the jury that will decide the primary competition winners in Tokyo this year.
Ichiyama Shozo, Tokyo’s programming director, stated that this movie is exceptional as it pays tribute to Marcello Mastroianni and pushes boundaries with experimentation. Notably, several French actors, including the main character Chiara Mastroianni, portray themselves using their real names. This blurs the line between reality and fiction, creating a fascinating blend of the stars’ true identities and their on-screen personas. Moreover, this film marks the centennial celebration of Marcello Mastroianni’s birth,” said Ichiyama Shozo.
The anime ’11 Rebels’ delves into the treacherous act by the Shibata clan of Niigata during the Boshin War, one of Japan’s most brutal conflicts. A group of 11 brave individuals embark on a seemingly impossible mission to defend a fortress. As the objectives of the Shibata clan, the former shogunate, and the new administration clash, their valiant struggle unfolds.
On November 1, the movie will be released for distribution by Toei. Last year, it was a collaborative venture during the Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, which is an integral part of TIFFCOM, the industry market associated with the Tokyo Film Festival.
Ichiyama stated that this movie continues the legacy of grand ensemble period dramas that Toei was famous for, boasting superior production qualities across all elements, including action scenes and set designs in modern Japanese cinema today. Notably, it highlights characters who have often been overlooked throughout history.
