Hugh Grant Rejected Studio Movies Due to ‘Pushback from Non-Creative Execs’: ‘You Felt Like a Big Corporation Was Breathing Down’ the Director’s Neck

As a long-time admirer of Hugh Grant‘s work, it’s fascinating to see his discerning approach towards roles and projects. His dedication to quality and creative freedom is truly commendable. It seems that even after decades in the industry, he hasn’t lost his knack for choosing unique and captivating stories.

In a recent chat with Vanity Fair, Hugh Grant shared that he’s turned down multiple opportunities to headline big-studio Hollywood films. However, he accepted the role as the antagonist in last year’s Paramount blockbuster “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which seems to be one of the few studio projects that he found appealing.

I’ve chosen to decline several projects that seemed lackluster in terms of quality or creativity for the filmmakers. It felt like working under the watchful eye of a massive corporation, which isn’t my preferred environment. I don’t want to make decisions that might put pressure on these talented creators. In fact, when given the opportunity, I’ve been direct and inquisitive. I question the directors right from the start. You can usually tell early on if there are creative restrictions, as I get a sense of the response when I propose ideas before signing up – if there’s pushback from non-creative executives, it’s clear the project may not be a good fit for me.

In my humble opinion, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” truly stands out as an exceptional movie. Despite its blockbuster status, it didn’t quite shine at the global box office, managing to gross only a little over $200 million worldwide.

Grant found it puzzling – why hadn’t they conducted market research prior? He believed that was the root of the problem: People simply assumed the public wouldn’t be interested in a movie based on this game. It left him wondering, why hadn’t anyone consulted the public first?

It seems that “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” might not become Hollywood’s next major franchise. Instead, Grant is set to revisit one of his favorite roles by playing Daniel Cleaver once again in the forthcoming fourth Bridget Jones movie titled “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” In 2016’s “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” Grant was unable to participate due to his character not fitting in, and he chose to step aside. A similar situation almost occurred with “Mad About the Boy.

Grant expressed his admiration for the script, stating that it moved him to tears and inspired him to be involved. However, he pointed out that there was no role suitable for Daniel Cleaver in it initially. They wanted him included, but ultimately made a decision that Grant found less than ideal.

Initially, Grant chose to pen unique sequences focusing on the character Daniel Cleaver, aiming to give him a greater significance within the narrative. The movie creators found these segments compelling and decided to retain them. This approval was sufficient for Grant to agree to take part in the film as an actor.

This Bridget Jones book is simply outstanding, and I find both the movie and its humor incredibly touching,” he continued. “Although my role only required a week’s work, the film will undoubtedly touch your heart deeply.

On Valentine’s Day 2025, you can watch “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” on Peacock! For additional details, check out Grant’s new interview at Vanity Fair’s site.
