Her journey from a vulnerable character in “WandaVision” to a full-blown villain in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was both surprising and captivating, leaving me on the edge of my seat.
Actress Elizabeth Olsen is willing to resume her role as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, provided the character’s development is handled thoughtfully. Since her last appearance in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (released in 2022), Wanda has transformed into a formidable villain and met a seemingly tragic end beneath a collapsed building. The outcome of her story remains unclear, as neither Olsen nor Marvel Studios have confirmed a return date for Scarlet Witch at this time.
I really enjoy revisiting this character when given the opportunity to do so effectively, and I feel fortunate that when I first started, I was utilized effectively,” Olsen stated in a recent FM104 interview (as reported by Collider). “For a moment, it seemed people weren’t sure how to use me, but if there’s a good way to utilize her again, I’m always eager to return.
After the premiere of “Doctor Strange 2”, Olsen openly admitted that she was taken aback by Marvel’s decision to turn Scarlet Witch into a villain. As a nominee for an Emmy, she expressed difficulty transitioning from portraying Scarlet Witch as a more vulnerable and complex character in the Disney+ series “WandaVision”, to her role as a full-blown villain in “Multiverse of Madness”.
Initially, I was apprehensive and uncertain as I hadn’t completed ‘WandaVision’ at the time, but we were almost done with it, Olsen shared with EbMaster following the sequel’s release. “I wondered, ‘Oh my goodness, how can I pull this off seamlessly?’ But I managed. It turned out to be a fantastic chance for audiences to empathize with the woman in ‘WandaVision’, root for her, and then find themselves drawn into the film, where they support her initially, but later grapple with their own feelings of conflict.
Olsen said, ‘No, that’s not something I do.’ It’s been nearly a decade since I started portraying her character, and I must say, I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. The reason I haven’t been constantly pitching ideas to Kevin Feige is because I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together. I believe ‘WandaVision’ was an unexpectedly fantastic opportunity for us.
Olsen stated, “Should anyone inform me that I’ve been let go from Marvel films, I would take pride in our accomplishments. Frankly, I’m working on finding ways to fill my schedule with different movies and characters, aiming to make it less about the Marvel Universe as a whole.
It’s unclear at this point if Scarlet Witch will reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Kevin Feige, who oversees the franchise, has shown a desire to bring the character back for another appearance on-screen.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, expressed that there’s a wealth of unexplored territory, stating, ‘We’ve barely scratched the surface of her comic book storylines.’ He continued, ‘I’d collaborate with Lizzie for another hundred years if we could. The multiverse offers endless possibilities! We’ll have to wait and see.’
