Doctors Hate This One Weird Trick For Getting A PS5 Pro For About $350

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of intrigue and skepticism regarding the imminent arrival of the PlayStation 5 Pro. The $700 price tag has certainly caught everyone’s attention, but the potential cost reduction strategy proposed by Mike Ybarra piques my interest.

After the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 Pro this week, most discussions about it have mainly focused on its $700 price tag instead of its sophisticated PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology. This makes sense given that $700 is a substantial amount to spend on a new console model that’s only been available for four years. However, as suggested by the former president of Blizzard, Mike Ybarra, there could be at least one method to lower that price. In other words, there might just be an unconventional tactic, or as some might say in advertisements, a “unique strategy.

Ybarra suggested a strategy that many fans had previously considered: swapping their current PS5 versions, thereby reducing the price of a future PS5 Pro by half.

As a gamer, I’m considering trading in my used PlayStation 5 console at GameStop for store credit, and they’re offering anywhere from $350 to $385, with the higher end for models that have a disc drive. However, if lots of gamers like me are doing this, will GameStop maintain these trade-in values or reduce them later on? Just because they’re offering these rates right now doesn’t mean it’ll be the same in November. This could potentially mess up my plan, considering GameStop is closing more stores and struggling financially.

The proposed approach may face an issue when gamers haven’t upgraded to the PlayStation 5 (PS5) as of now. Since they don’t have an older console to trade in, buying a PS5 Pro might still be financially challenging for some enthusiasts. However, if there’s a sudden influx of second-hand PS5 consoles onto the market—even with GameStop’s price increase—this could potentially offer a viable solution for those who haven’t transitioned to the current console generation yet.

Sony will release the PS5 Pro on November 7.
