As a dedicated fan with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia upon hearing about Call of Duty: Future Warfare, a game that never saw the light of day back in 2010. Having played every installment since the original, I find myself yearning for glimpses into what could have been. The fact that this game was reportedly under development at Neversoft, the studio behind Tony Hawk Pro Skater, adds an intriguing twist to the tale.
Back in the day, around 2010, I stumbled upon some intriguing missions online, rumored to be from an unlaunched Call of Duty game. This secret project was codenamed NX1, with whispers of it being called Call of Duty: Future Warfare. It was said to be in the capable hands of the talented team at Neversoft, known for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series.
Three distinct missions for Call of Duty: Future Warfare, originally leaked by Insider Gaming on YouTube by Generalkidd, have been discovered. It’s worth noting that the game was never officially announced but rumors suggest it had a nearly finished campaign prior to its reveal. The gameplay clips, which can be viewed below, incorporate voice acting, though it is speculated these may be placeholders until production progressed more.
Towards the start of the year, clips showing gameplay for Call of Duty: Future Warfare emerged online, hinting at its existence. It was later revealed that the game had been in development by Neversoft, following the upheaval at Infinity Ward which led to Jason West and Vince Zampella leaving the studio (they subsequently founded Respawn Entertainment). Brian Bright, a developer involved in the project, mentioned that the aim was to produce a futuristic installment within the Call of Duty series.
Way back in 2010, I discovered that Activision had indeed secured a number of web domains featuring Call of Duty: Future Warfare. Interestingly enough, just recently they shared that their roadmap for Call of Duty extends all the way to 2027, with a whopping 3,000 individuals dedicated to the development of this first-person shooter franchise!
Next month, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 launches on October 25.
