As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the announcement of the PS5 Pro has me both excited and apprehensive. On one hand, the prospect of playing games at 4K resolution at 60fps is tantalizing, especially for those who crave the ultimate gaming experience. However, as someone who’s been through multiple console generations, I can’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when it comes to mid-generation hardware upgrades and their price tags.
The rumored PS5 Pro is indeed authentic, with an anticipated release soon. During a recent livestream, Sony unveiled that the PS5 Pro will boast improved processing power compared to the standard PS5 and PS5 Slim versions. This upgrade enables PS5 games, as well as certain PS4 games, to be played in 4K resolution at a smooth 60 frames per second (fps). Essentially, the PS5 Pro could provide both high-definition visuals similar to fidelity mode and smooth gameplay like performance mode. The enhanced console is scheduled for release on November 7 at a price of $700, which is $200 more than the PS5 Slim ($500) and $250 more than the PS5 Digital Slim ($450).
The PS5 Pro is a digital-only console, but it supports the $80 disc drive attachment PlayStation released last year. If you prefer to place your consoles upright, you’ll need to buy the optional vertical stand for $30. All told, you could be looking at $820 plus your local tax rate. That’s pretty steep for a mid-generation hardware refresh, but if the visual upgrades have already caught your eye, you can preorder the PS5 starting September 26.
